911 car insurance, where to go?
I currently have collector car insurance through Classic Car. Premiums are 400/yr, BUT I cannot drive the car for a overnight 'pleasure' vacation or to a ball game or even the mall. Strictly for club events (no racing) or a short drive, then back home.
I called LeLand West. They require each driver in the house to have a 1992 or newer car, in addition to my Porsche. As a pilot I go to work once a week (for 4 days), and then home. I only require one car for my wife, and she drops me off, and we have a Jetta. Thus, they will not insure me. Is there company out there that is reasonable, and lets you drive 3-5k a year and go on trips (overnights too). Thanks in advance, Conrad 1984 Carrera Coupe chip and headers, its all i can afford |

I just switched to Shelters Insurance from Farmers(they suck). Farmers tried to FORCE a 1,000 deductible on me and a 10% off the top of any claim. I thought that was total BS! So i checked around and got 100/50/100 full coverage for >600/year. the number for shelters is 1-800-shelter. good luck.

Try Haggerty Insurance. My coverage is great (agreed value) and cheap. 350/yr. Car must be 20 years old I believe. Their number is 800-922-4050. great people to deal with. 81'SC

Hagerty. They are wonderful. When I got my annual policy renewal bill a couple of months ago, there was a note asking if my wife had "recovered" from the broken collarbone she'd suffered in a bike spill a year ago. I'd met young Hagerty himself at the Amelia Island Concours soon thereafter, and he'd made a note of this and had some assistant remember it. Try that with Mister Allstate.
The Hagerty insurance on my relatively modified 911SC costs about $550 a year--I'm about 60 miles north of New York City, a basically gold-plated area--with no mileage limitations. I have to keep the thing garaged and have one more car than there are drivers in our family: wife's RAV, daughter's Neon, my A4 and then the 911 becomes a "collector car." Obviously I'm not supposed to commute in it--and I haven't commuted for 20 years anyway--but there are no stipulations about taking it to the local mall, saloon or Mustang Ranch. Stephan

I've had J.C. Taylor for just a year now, but the cost and restrictions were fine for me: $200 / year for $13K insurance on '78 911SC, 5000 miles a year cap. I did have to have a second car, but there was no problems as with Leland West, and the car is in a locked garage... but that goes w/o saying. They are on the web.
As soon as the car is 25 years old I will call State Farm and see if the "hobby car" rate is more reasonable for an run-o-the-mill no restriction on the mileage policy.

I had Allstate and have switched to Farmers. The dicks at Allstate would not write a "group" policy on my cars, motorcycle and house and instead forced me to insure them with individual policies.
Needless to say I put everything under a umbrella policy and Farmers here in Phoenix was very competitive. Deductable was whatever I wanted it and they put the Porsche as the "weekend" car and bike (it has to have comp as its on a loan) is the primary vehicle. Even so, comp on the 911 is 1/3rd of the cost of what I was paying with Allstate. Happy with them so far... Joe

I currently have Leland West on my '83 Cab. I had a company called America Collectors out of NJ and they gave similar rates on the SC but with more limits than Leland - but I must say I had them for more than ten years and I had no problem. I placed a second car stated value TR3 (~$16k) for only $90/year. I had both my '67 Porsche and TR3 totaled by a tree and they reimbursed both with no questions. I would go back to them in a second - somewhat restrictive but very good!
I would check into them - I think they are sold through independents.

I have 2 cars and insure the 72 as a recreational vehicle through state farm, Full coverage-$308\yr. Has to be driven under 6000 mile\yr. I started insuring the car this way about 7 yrs ago and not once have they asked or had me come in and show them the mileage.
