Installing hand throttle- how does it work?
OK I want to instal a hand throttle in my 77. I have the lever from a 1970 that I parted out. My question is what else do I need, and how does this work? Please describe it to me or even better if someone has a diagram (schematic)

The hand throttles on early cars used a plastic piece that connected to the lever on the e-brake assembly. It acted on a stop on the throttle cable, as you lift up on the hand throttle it pushes the plastic piece against the throttle cable stop and activates the throttle. On many cars, this plastic piece has long since broken apart and fallen into the tunnel. To install a hand throttle, you would need the lever, the plastic connector and some way of placing a
stop on the cable for the lever to push against. If I remember correctly, the slide stop on the cable has a set screw to hold it in place - if I remember. See what other posts you get but I can get you part numbers from the parts book if you want. Bruce Herrmann 73911S |
Thanks Bruce, I am actually in luck, I have the plastic peice you are referring to also. Now all I have to do is find out how to get a stop screw somewhere and the find out how it all pieces together, that'll be the fun part.

Hello
The stop is a barrel like piece and has a slit to slide it over the pullrod. It is escured with a small screw with a slot for a normal screwdriver. Insatallation is tricky but you will find the way. Grüsse http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/yltype.gif |
The part you need is the barrel, part number
901.424.319.00 and the screw to hold it down, 900.044.002.02 It is tricky to install but best done with the handbrake assembly removed or at least lifted up out of the way. Bruce Herrmann |

The hand throttle is fantastic! I am a sure I will get this somewhat incorrect but I believe that because there is no choke on old carbs the engine will hunt and peck upon start up unless you are giving it a little gass to bring the rpm's where you want them. The little hand throttle does this exact thing. It grabs the linkage and essentially pushes the accelerator so you run at a higher rpm. I like to have it halfway up until I have driven for a few minutes. Put it down when you are warmed up!
When I had my car at dealer for major overhaul (you guys remember..."$26 spark plugs") the mechanic said for a few bucks more he'll hook the hand throttle up. I said why bother, he replied "you'll love it". He was correct. Particularly for cold mornings. Joe 68L is this a good explanation? not sure if I got it right? |
Joehahn has the same idea as I. My car is really hunting during warm restarts, I know this will not fix my problem. But I am hoping it will at least stop my car from stalling in traffic. Embarassing especially in a Porsche.

The parsts are available from Porsche dealers. They are real cheap and have been upgraded to work better. Try and find some in stock and get the collar and the soft plastic piece that fits in there on the lever. It's a bear to get all together but you will be stoked once you get it set up. We are talking about less then 40 bucks worth of new stuff. My hand throttle makes me happy in the morning for a good solid itle for warm up. Go off list to get mosr details since I just did this job. Alex

Early CIS had a othe WUR and needed the handthrottle. Good adjustet you can lift the HT to 4000/min witch was used as a cruise control in ancient times ( Now you understand why Porsche has so big brakes ) Fiddeling in the part is a 5 minute action and a other 5 to adjust.if you have done this more the once and the passenger seat is out off the way. I´ll try to discripe the base trick: When you insert the handbrakeassembley you need a small hook to lift up the hand throotle finger. If you have it over the rod it is done. If it will fall down and you see it after you have finished then you can use the acces hole to fish it up and the you bend the rod with a secound srewdriver and let snap it in. Good advice as always Roland, I have it in and it seems to work well, just that it is very sensitive. Little movements make big RPM changes.
Also a point I found was to tighten the set screw where it is needed, push down on the gas pedal to bring into easier access range. Shawn |

An other hint is to replace the original screw with a hex screw. The you can use the hex key as a longitutinal adjuster. But this modification will cost points on concourse and some mechanic will not realize it and think the part is defective. The way is like you give to much throttle and loose the part and let slide itself to the position. The problem is that the lock will be to far back on idle and so be out off the adjustment hole. There is also a trick, do it once and the next times you will find the position by guessing. Porsche says the hand throttle should lift up to 3000-3500 min and this can be done with some space beetween the stop and the lever. If you go close you can get to 4000 but if the lever isn´t full down your idle will be affectet. While you are at that then look if you have the new style coupler link coming out the rear firewall.
