Put a Carrera tail on it. I just put one on my '87 and it looks great and makes the car perform better as well. I just returned form a 4 day tour of the Big Bend area with other Porsches and my engine oil temps ran 10-15 deg cooler than without the tail. The A/C seemed to work better as well. Here are some pics of my installation. It is an aftermarket fiberglass tail painted to match the car.

I love my whaletail, but I'd like to have a duck for a change up. IMO, you gotta pack the wheel wells full of tire to make the whaletail work though.

not sure if you might find this an an intersesting DUCK we are currently working on?
PORSCHE RS AMERICA 3.6L 1994 with TRE Motors modified FIBER body kit 1972 RS AMERICA retro look
A/C Parallel Flow Micro-Channel Front & Rear Condensers RSA TEST CAR I am involved in a current project to make an RSA A/C COLD; I custom hand made the A/C PFC condensers for this DUCK: Stokes Automotive Porsche Specialists near Fort Lauderdale are doing the A/C Refit: (Someone else did the body work conversion? and someone did a bad job with A/C modification work that was attempted, so the A/C work they did had to be gutted ) this is the link to what is currently being done on this car to greatly enhance the A/C system using the latest micro-channel condenser technology http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/617196-i-make-parallel-flow-micro-channel-condensers-911s-front-rear-13.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332083160.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332083369.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332083565.jpg my latest designed (1963-2004) 911 REAR Countour Parallel Flow Micro-Channel March 2012 Condenser |
Funny thing, I started this thread, got lots of good input, plenty of great pics, and I still can't decide. I guess I need one of each. The Carrera tail will have not rubber, be light I hope and the duck needs to modify to fit the inter cooler I may add at some point.

Looks are one thing, but if it's performance then the Carrera tail is so much better. I ran a duck on my 73 RSR clone (3.8 slide motor) and my best time at Autoclub Speedway (Fontana) was 1:53 and change. I removed the duck tail and replaced it with an IROC tail and magically jumped to 1:49. Love the duck look, but no comparison if lap times are important.

Thanks for that info

Tails on 3.2 and 964
My 88 3.2 coupe (NA) came with the factory tail and I loved how it seemed to extend the lines of the car.
My 93 964 coupe came with an all FG tail installed and the stock motorized wing and decklid in a crate. I have since sold the duck, installed the factory deck and motorized wing, and installed a GettyDesigns RSA FG wing (which still need to be cured and painted). Here are a few pics in various configs. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332098894.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332098948.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332098994.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332099392.jpg Hope this helps! OK now I've really done it.
I just bought a 965 intercooler to clear. I'd like as little a profile as possible, The duck might just really be too small but what will clear it? Looking at the carrera tail full fiberglass still, euro rs tail, or flatnose. Opinions? |
QuattroRunner - How about putting your tail in the permanent "up" position? And maybe cleaning up all the bracketry that allows it to move up/down?

I can't imagine you get good airflow to the cooler that way, but maybe so. Maybe you could just somehow cram it all under a highly modified lid with the C2 regular tail in the up position, as mentioned above. Obviously you'd see the back of the cooler sticking out, but, who knows. Flatnose - do you mean the 964 Turbo S tail? I don't know how it looks on a narrow body car. Euro RS, you mean the 70's G-model RS not the 993 one right? Personally I think the C2 tail modified in the 'up' position might be cool, That's what I think. Good luck ;) Take care! |
IMO, duck tails looks better with non accordion "back dated" or aftermarket bumpers. Carrera tails look better with the accordion style impact bumpers.

So I ended up with a carrera spoiler notched for the garretsin cooler that I have.
It looks ok, |
This car looks great :) It looks so much better than the ducktail that everybody is throwing on theirs 911
