72 oil tank removal
Ok I need some help if you please!
I have loosened the strap and partially removed the tank. Its pretty much just hanging there now but I cant remove the oil return line attached to the topp of the tank! I have used a long adjustable wrench and have tried WD40 but just cannot get it loose. Is a flare nut wrench the only way to loosen the nut on this line? I will try anything! tx, Joe |

I had the same problem with my tank when I decided to remove it and clean it up. I could not get the tubing nuts free. I sacrificed a cheap 36mm 3/4" drive socket and made a flare socket with it. Crude, but it worked. I used a 3" extension on my 3/4" drive ratchet and put it over the elbow with the elbow turning out of the cut-away socket wall. Glad that I can finally give some advice here after all the help I have received. Wade ![]() ![]()

Wade that is brilliant! I may need to just go out and by a flare nut wrench.
I need to ask a few more q's: Which parts should I replace while I am at the tank? all hoses, sender, gasket? tx again, Joe. |

Maybe its easier to undo the other end of the oil line at the filter console then remove the entire assembly. Then you can get a decent spanner on the oil line nut. I had to replace that oil line as it was corroded, plus the 2 x breather hoses as they were just plain ugly. The 3 plastic isolating washers between the 72 oil tank and the body are no longer available so if yours are in good order do not loose them. I substituted replacement rubber versions. I also replaced the oil level sender gasket as well as replaced the 2 wires to the terminals as they were very brittle and corroded. Do not make my error and refit the tank without remembering to reattach these wires, beginners error. Refitting the tank can take some enthusiasm, not much room to spare at all.

+ 1 on removing in the other end. And; the two oil breather lines is usally dry and cracked, so it is easier to just cut them and remove them once the tank is on the ground.
Be careful, I ended up denting the fender from the inside. Regards, Johan

![]() ![]() We all struggle to take these hose assys off when they have been welded together by rust & corrosion over a period of possibly 40 years. I bought one of these 36mm Flare wrenches....... ![]() and it definately was one of my better investments. The last one I did recently I had to loosen the tank, get the wrench on the fitting, then re-mount the tank back in place to hold it secure enough for me to use both hands to get it off. If you have a leaking hose and are planning on replacing it, then partially cut thru the nut with a air cut-off wheel and use a air chisel w light taps to break it loose.
