Fiber glass front spoiler on 1972 911 S?

Hi,

my 1972 Porsche 911 S Coupé is a early car, with the chassis number 211. Recently I have heard that the early 2.4S cars might have had a fiberglass front spoiler/bumper from factory, not steel. If anyone know anything about this, please let me know.

Thanks,

Johan

Yes, this is true. There's a thread on this over on the Early S Registry that hopefully you can find. I happened to find this out myself when I was going through the factory workshop manual where they listed the changeover from fiberglass to steel, and as I recall they listed the serial number(s) which was the cutoff, or perhaps it was the date. In any event, it's in print by Porsche. A friend of mine has one of these on his very early 72S.

edit:
I checked and found a few threads on this over on the early s registry, here's one from 2007, but I know there's an earlier one as well.

Wow, thanks Eric, I found this thread:

1972 - 73 MY , S model front spoilers

So now I have to sell my steel one....

Ny idea where to find an original fg one?

Thanks,

Johan

Johan,

Unless you had a real one in front of you to compare, I don't know how you would validate an original fiberglass one.

I would just get a repro glass one and not worry. Who's going to tell you it's the wrong glass one?

My last 72 had an original fiberglass bumper. Have seen these on several 72s. They should be pretty easy to tell from a modern repro if you look really closely, mainly at the back at the fiberglass weave and where the brackets are molded in, and from the general aging of the item.
