Look like it (with the original engine) according to the Red book.

While the book has a typo in the chassis range, look like the Targa production was 646.

Down to 469 according to 911 Performance Handbook.

Porsche Record Keeping was not their forte...

Okay, let's really mess this up.

The source I checked shows the VIN as a 1977 3.0L Targa Carrera

The engine number checks out to be a 1977 3.0L Carrera engine.

Here's the catch--the engine type, 930/02, show up as a 1976 Carrera engine and 77's should have engine type 911/44 for a Targa Carrera.

Given that the engine number is relative late in the series, one would think it would have the 911/44 type number.

Of course, every source has it's inaccuracies, that's what keeps us all honest. Hopefully, someone (Grady?) can clarify the apparent oddity in engine type number.

Sounds like a typo as the the 3.0 Carreras and Turbo 3.0 were the first of the 930 type numbers. 911/44 seems like the last of the 2.7 types.

L.G.

Out of curiosity, what is your source?

Wayne's Rebuild got the 930/02 as 77 Carrera as well.

The Red book, Wayne's and Bruce's all shows the 911/44 2.7 engine for a California 911S/Carrera for the H series (Aug 74-July75).

P.S. Slow typer & researcher...

I have often used this link, which tends to be fairly reliable:
Porsche 911 Fahrzeugidentifikation

This source also shows the 911/44 for a U.S. California engine for the 75 model year but the type number reappears in the 1977 3.0 Targa Carrera as I posted. Does seem odd and may likely be a typo.

Yeah none of them are immune, the redbook show the Chassis range as 9117610001-9117600646 (so does the link)

Thanks for the link.

Nope, not correct. The Carerra 3.0 cars, both coupe and targa, came with a 930/02 engine. I think the sportomatic cars might have had a different engine number, type 930/12. This was true both of the years they were produced.

Completely different engines to the various 911 type versions that preceded them and not as similar as you might think to the later 911SC engines.
