restoring my front end
AAAA!! for all of you from Toronto, Canada - my name is Joe and I have a great time reading all the threads and posts listed on this forum. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site which gave me the courage to tackle my front end on my 83 911sc. After buying the car 8 years ago I noticed that my aluminum frame where the ride height pin goes through was broken (pictures to follow - I hope I don't screw it up). I've now purchased a used one and am attempting to change it. While doing so, I decided to change my torsion bars and bushings along with maybe replacing my tie rods. I wanted to spruce up my A frames - taking them off and powder coating them which brought me to removing the ball joint nut which I found is virtually impossible to remove. This might be a stupid question but do I need to remove the wedge bolt? Any help would be appreciated.

You don't need to remove the wedge pin to remove the nut ; only when you want to pull the joint out.
That said, the nut is a nasty brute and I resorted to drilling a hole through one side of the nut and bash prying it off with a cold chisel. Of course as I was replacing the ball joint I did not care that the thread was damaged. It deserved to die! There was no corrosion on the threads so I suspect galling of the fine threads is the problem. Muchos friction to be overcome , as you have discovered. Reinstalling requires the special tool or your home made version. |
thanks for the info.
after heating it up with the torch, pounding it with a chisel and cursing at it, it still would not move. So I decided I needed new ball joints and drilled it out. Apparently it's no match for the drill. |
