How do I use this MASSIVE thing?
 

Hello - first time poster to this board. I have a BMW R1100S, and use that board all the time. The reason I'm posting here today is that I have made the decision to buy a 911, and I would like to use the valuable information here to help me make an educated purchase. Specifically, I have about US$40K to spend, and want to make the right choice. I live in Hong Kong, so I could make a lot of use of the cabriolet, which is one significant factor that I will consider.

I would appreciate your advise. I intended to try to do the research on this site first, before posting, but this is so huge (with 167,000 posts! and 22,000 threads! - this is 10 times the size of the BMW subsection) that I don't know where to start.

I appreciate any help you all can give, hopefully through responding, but also by pointing me towards previous discussion that may be on point. Thanks!

Steve - I'll share with you my experience as I just went through a purchase last Fall and ended up with an '83 SC Cab with many upgrades in great shape - but my budget was around $30k. For your budget a nice early '90's C2 or C4 Cab can be had for mid $30's. That will leave you some money for some updates and maintenance. I actaully liked the lines on the later Carrera's better, but for the money the SC for me was the way to go.

I picked up my Cab with 50k miles on it for $25k - no regrets! I'd post a picture but all my e-pics are too large for the board?

for US40K, you can look into a 993. I have a friend who just purchased a 1995 6-speed 993 for USD40k through Jebsen HK not too long ago.

I don't know what Porsches go for in HK. But here $40k will get you a 993 (if you really shop) or a very nice 964. I have heard bad things about the '95 993 and the '90-'91 964's. If you stretch your budget to the limit, make sure the car you get needs nothing. The maint. costs on 964's and 993's are significantly larger than on Carreras and SC's.

Like the others have said, with $40,000 US, you could almost have your pick of any pre-96 cab. You need to decide what style you like most though.


Do you like the looks of the early cars, pre 74? Do you really want a cab, or would a Targa suffice? Or maybe a coupe, because you want the extra rigid chasis? Do you want the newest Porsche you can affoard?

The FIRST thing you need to do is read the 911 FAQ, located off the Pelican Parts main page. There are also numerous articles and tech info that helped me make my decision on which car.

That'll help you narrow down the model and year, and you can start using that to see where your price matches. I'm guessing that you may need to import what you want, which affect the price too - is that correct?

Once you know what model it's easier to search these 167000 posts for information about that model. When I looked for my 911T, I could search for that and it came up with a couple thousand topics. I also threw in "72" and got more specific info.

There's a zillion classifieds on the web in addition to Pelican, go to http://www.google.com and search for "Porsche classifieds". Also try www.autotrader.com, and sites like that.
