DOT approved VS Slicks

This might be a stupid question but…

I need a new set of track tires, and was going to ‘upgrade’ to Hoosier R3S03’s, but then started thinking about slicks. I only do a few ‘Drivers Ed’ track events a year, and run street tires the rest of the time (or if it rains at the track). My car seams to be very easy on tires (914-6), the last set (Kumos) have lasted 6 or 7 DE weekends over 2 years, and are still not completely worn out, although they did seam a little slippery, I flat spotted the rears with a spin.

What really is the difference between the DOT Hoosiers and Hoosier slicks of a similar size? I assume they are stickier and don’t last as long, but how significant is the difference? What do the track experts think?

I, too, have a track-only 914-6 and I exclusively use Goodyear G-19s. They are amazingly communicative (as you'd expect), and stick like glue. The car, being very light, doesn't use the tires like you'd expect. I drive in every event (almost) that Potomac runs (I'm the "new" Chief Instructor), and I've been using the same tires for three years. I've only replaced one tire (rock cut at VIR), and I think I'll be into tire rot before the tires go away. . .I've attached a couple of pictures. I use 9 x 15s all around, mounted on 8 x 15 Fuchs. Works great for me! Okay, so I've already uploaded the other pictures (on this server) and I can't attach the pictures. Anyway, you get the idea. . .

Porsche Crest Tires

You may want to check with the track chairman in the region you will run with regarding tires. Some regions do not allow non-DOT rated tires.

In my experience, the slicks/Hoosiers are worth between 1- 2.5 seconds a lap on a 2.5 mile road course when compared to the R compound tires.

I have used an assortment of the various R compound tires offered. I am currently using the Kuhmos which I am happy with.

I would love to run the slicks full time, but I can not afford the trailer. I have to drive my car to all events.

Your experience may differ.

I know that in our PCA region (Golden Gate) you are only allowed to full-race slicks if you have a roll CAGE.

Check your club's rules closely before making the change from the R-compound DOT tires.

Have fun!

Goodyear G-19s are sourced from http://www.racegoodyear.com/distributors.html

Follow the link and you'll find the appropriate dealer in your area. The 9 x 15s are ~$178 per (or so). Good luck on these boys, you'll never, ever go back. By the way, I run in GT-4R, so I do in fact have a full cage. . .
