To change the gauge color or not to change
I am pondering the idea of changing the black gauge faces to white. I have a red on black 87 Cab. Has anyone made this color change and do you have any pros or cons?
Thanks, Jimmy |
White is nice
Had mine redone at Palo Alto Speedo, White faces with orange pointers.
Looks awsom and most folks like it. Randy Jones 1971 911 |
Epster77,
Resist! Resist! Primping the interior is at best a valueless excercise - it may be seen as "care" for a beloved car, but limit mods to the functional variety, or end up in "furry dice hell" ;) (Dons flameproof overalls) If you love to spend money on your car, improve it's performance, or refurbish the delightfully understated elegance of the fine original factory interior. I've said my piece. I'm waiting for the flak! |
Where can I find RUF gauge faces, real or fake ?
They´re cool! Any URLs? |
|
Don't do it! I think it's a fashion thing of recent times, and it will become unfashionable quite fast and ultimately devalue the car - when it comes time to sell most buyers value authenticity and originality, less so mechanically, but definitely for appearance, and I say most buyers, some might like it, I guess.

I have seen it done on a few 911s and it looked pretty good... but on most it just makes the car look tacky. You already have the red on black combo... white guages, ss pedals, just a bit to much- just my .02.
Oh- big (BIG) conn is that if your car has orig low miles breaking into the odometer area might concern a potential buyer.... |
I have em, but I definitely agree with carnut on the low miles issue. If you have low miles and you want them to be believed, then do not do it.
|
The ONLY time I ever saw white gauges in a 911 that looked OK was in a white car with white door panel inserts and white-on-black interior detailing.
The black-on-black look is classic and timeless, don't disrupt it. I'll bet if the cars came originally with white gauges, we would all be scurrying to change them to black. |
GUYS LEAVE THE FACES ALONE BUT TELL ME WHERE TO GET BETTER LAMPS TO GO IN THEM.
THANKS KEITH EPPERLY |
Thanks everyone for the input....many valid points....I am definately gonna stick to the black gauges:cool:
Sean, I noticed you are from Atlanta, so I read your profile. You're car looks great! Also, I probably have met you before. I have bought and sold at your Auction for 8 years, for Car Pro Automotive, but am currently looking for work. Atlanta Auto Auction is a fantastic source to buy and sell inventory. Your Arbitration department has saved my butt on occasion. Many thanks. Jimmy |
Jimmy- thanks for the kind words and good luck on your search. Next time you are at the auction stop by and mention this BBS-<br>
You know there are a bunch of us headed to Hershey next weekend... P car caravan- you should join us! |
What about RUF gauge faces?

I would strongly advise any 911 driver to not consider resale value when doing mods to one's car. Any modification I do to my car I do because I want it, find value in it for myself and will enjoy driving it so. Customizing toys almost never adds dollar for dollar value. I have a set of grey gauge faces on the way and am not yet sure if I'll go ahead and install them. But so far I like the cars I've seen with them and look forward to better night visibility as well. No one is gonna buy or not buy my car (someday far in the future) because I have a Porsche crest in my Momo, a chip, a K&N filter, a cat bypass, blah, blah, blah. I've learned this lesson well while customizing guns and then watching them sell for the same price as if i had not just dropped $100 on tritium night sights or whatever. Do what you want to your car and enjoy it. No one else will spend nearly as much time driving it as you will and thus no one else will enjoy the mods nearly as much as you do. Porsches, while slow to depreciate, are cars made to be driven and enjoyed, and thus are not super investment deals. Well worth every penny though, IMHO.

Looks like I am going against the grain for most here. I say do it. I like the look of them. And like Richard says don't do things just for resale.
If you like them do it, if you are unsure (which it sounds as if you are...wait! Shawn |
I have direction!!!!!!
For years I have pondered my true direction, like so many of us, but now I know for sure "Fuzzy Dice Hell" that is where I'm headed, I'm glad to know that. I can now rest in peace at night having been told that I'm going to "Fuzzy Dice Hell".
Hey pwd72s, Iris and I are goin' to "Fuzzy Dice Hell"! Wana' go? You can drive! If I get sent to"Fuzzy Dice Hell" for havin' white gauge faces. Where is this guy going to send me for havin' carbon fiber dash inserts, or PMO carbs, or a third brake light in the tail. 1967 911 door and dash pads with RS America door panels will also get me a few extra miles. white guages
I may be getting in late on this but I've been trying to decide on white gauges for my '87 Cab white with navy int/top. thought the white gauges would go nice with white car and with the top down it would really bring attention to the dash and the powerful looking gauges. I bought the $150 set from one of the mags. got them and they were crappy. plastic and the cutouts still had rough edges. so I sent them back and ate the shipping both ways. no way I was going to use them. I'm still considering NH silkscreening.
question: doesn't VDO sell replacement OEM black gauge faces (in case I want to go back to black in OEM condition, not repainted twice) |
