Help please----new tires recommendations?
I have a 1988 coupe with Fulda extremo tires (225 rear 205 front) in need of replacement. I drive the car about 100 miles a week, no racing. I'm not looking to spend a fortune but don't want to put on some cheapo tires that I'll regret. One tire placed tried to sell me falken, pretty much bottom of his price range. Any recommendations for a good tire at a reasonable price?
Thank you! |

Not the cheapest or the most expensive....
I really like my Conti Extreme Contact tires. Quiet yet offer very good grip in the corners when I have wanted to have some fun.

I am running Kuhmo ecsta ASX ( 205 -225) on 7 x 8 x16" . about $450 for the set of 4. Good treadwear, quiet and sticky.

My 911 is my daily driver and I love my Continental Conti Contact DWS tires. Had them on my 2004 GTO too. A great all around tire. Got me through 8" of unplowed snow I was pushing with the front of the car today with confidence and still great handling in the extremes.

You don't say which type of Falkens. I've had Falken FK 451s (or was it the 452?) on my car. They were good for spirited, but not race-pace type driving. Decent comfort. Good but not great stick. Sounds like they'd be a good candidate for the type of driving you describe.
The Falken Azeni RT 615 (or whatever they're called these days) is their autocross tire. Probably more than what you'd need for street use.

I've got Continental Extreme DWS (all season), I did a search on Rennlist & other places that helped guide me to these great tires. IMHO, check out Conti. & what people are saying about these before you purchase, I'm impressed

You don't say where you live, what do you expect from a performance aspect, what you expect from a durability aspect and the type of conditions that you'll likely be driving in. All those questions are important in the selection, I personally want the stickiest tire, outside race spec, (in nice summer condtions) I can find since I put only 3-5k a year on the car and want the driving experience to be optimal. I avoid driving in snow but sometimes get caught in rain while on tour. As a result, I opted for a summer only performance tire, BF Goodrich G-force sport (not A/S). I likely have a more difficult time finding proper tire sizes than you since I run 15". These have been pretty good. But there are many better in the 16"+ range. Good luck

Thanks to everybody
Appreciate all your recommendations. I live in FL so an occasional rain is the worst I'll face, and the points you've made will help me make a decision. I did learn that tire kingdom stopped selling my extremos several years back, and they don't appear to be available anywhere else..... Anyway, thanks again and see you on the road!

Since you live in florida and can get away with a summer tire year round, something like the Bridgestone RE-11 or the Dunlop Direzza Star Spec would work well. They are both good in wet and dry conditions.
Skimping on tires is a false economy, as I see it.

Hankook
I ran Falken's and really enjoyed them. Now I'm running on Hankook K106's and like them even better.

Check the Bridgestone RE760s -- good grip, progressive release (e.g., when the start to slip you get plenty of warning), large circumferential rain grooves for the short but heavy downpour, they don't wander/tramline on grooved pavement (at least out here in CA), reasonably priced, and lots of availability.
I run 205-55-16 and 225-50-16 F/R on 7/8X16 Fuchs. No clearance issues. HTH
