Lightbulb 1/4" drive torque wrench alternative

Recent posts regarding the difficulty of attaining the correct torque when tightening rocker arm shaft pinch bolts prompt the reposting of this idea for making an adapter that allows the use of a regular 3/8" drive torque wrench in the confined work space of a 911 engine cam tower. Obtain a 1/4 " drive ratchet; the Sears Craftsman models work nicely has they have a compact head/ratcheting mechanism and are reasonably priced. Weld a small 3/8" drive socket (a 10 mm size works but any small size will do) to the tip of the handle end of the ratchet. Weld the socket so the socket's 3/8" drive square is on the side opposite to the 1/4" drive of the ratchet. Then use by mounting a 5mm hex 1/4" drive bit on the ratchet and adjusting the torque setting on the torque wrench to compensate for the additional lever arm imparted by the adapter; most torque wrench instructions show this adjustment calculation. This isn't my idea (my Porsche mentor built this adapter) but I have used it and it works well with the bonus of the ratchet mechanism to allow easy respositioning. Cheers, Jim

Cool

Ive never really encountered a problem torquing the rocker shaft bolts. Ive installed the rocker shafts one at a time and working from one side of the tower to the other.... the center rocker I just put an extension on my torque wrench and reach through the bore to grab the bolt... the outer rocker shafts can be torqued directly...seems like welding adapters and having to use calculations to account for the adapter offset is more a pain than its worth.

Cool

I don't like the factory specs. on the rocker shaft...I tighten cave man style...I dry/no oil the shafts and bore then install dry then use a squirter to inject oil into the little itty bitty hole...Ron

One can't always reach in through the cam tower rocker arm shaft bores with extensions; for example if one is working with the engine in the car. Hence the usefulness of a 1/4" torque wrench or the above described adapter. RoninLB, I gave up manually gaging torque. I broke enough fasteners in the Chevy world of steel and cast iron doing that. I knew I wouldn't have a prayer in the Porsche world of magnesium, aluminum and "stretch bolts". Cheers, Jim
