Carrera a/c?

The a/c on my 87 carrera has not worked for awhile. I have a leaking a/c line and the system needs to recharged. I never use the a/c so the my question is first, am I doing damage to the compressor by not using it and not having coolant in the system and would it be better to remove the compressor if I am not going to use it?

Thanks - Michaelw

Michael, I replaced the "O" rings where the lines meet the compressor on my '83. Evacuated and Charged and it works fine. Don't know if your summer gets as hot as ours here in Louisiana, but it's nice to have. I think all the systems tend to leak down over a couple seasons due to the design and length of the lines. If you remove the compressor be sure and plug the lines in case you ever change your mind.

Porsche Crest A/C

If there is not adequate pressure in your a/c system, the pressure switch will not allow the a/c clutch to engage. So other than a few o-rings that deteriorate over time, the health of your compressor will fine.

Usually the o-rings that seal the front or rear condensor are the culprit, change your receiver/dryer if the system is open to the atmosphere. Checking the system is not a backyard type of repair.
