tool source?

I am getting ready to remove the doors on my 71 coupe project. Seems the hinges are held on by a 12 point bolt. I did a search and found these to be a 12 point "triple square" type bolt. Now the question is,

Where do I buy some of these bit? I searched the sites of Chraftsman, MAC, Snap-On, harbour Freight, etc. I even called several auto tool stores here in the DC area. I can not locate them anywhere.

I know that some of you that own later cars need them for CV axle work. I assume that these bits can be purchaced. Any sources would be a great help.

Bought my set at the local Pepboys store. Needed it for the 12-point bolts on the Porsche flywheel.

I am very sure Snapon or MAC have them. Napa... too.

if you just remove the hinge pins, there's no lineup problems on reinstallation and no chipped paint around the bolt heads.

Have you tried Pelican. I believe our host has them for sale.

Thanks for the sources. I will check my local Pep-boys. If not I will be ordering from Pelican. It seems I did not see them on the site when I looked for the tools. I have to admit I was not looking in the right spot.

JW- I am planning on completely removing the hinges. I have some rust repair to do in that area. Besides, I will be hanging and aligning some Glass doors as the project progresses.

Thanks for all the help. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

I buy my 12 points at Sears.

jpnovak 04-10-2002 09:52 AM

My local Sears did not have them. I asked and the guy said I wanted Torx bits. "No" I replied, I want 12 point. He still did not get it. It was not the best customer service.

Snap-on has them. You can get them on their web site. I flagged down both Mac and Snap-on trucks and they all said it is not a very common item to carry unless they have Porsche dealers on their route, or at least people who work on Pcars. As sombody else said, I think you can get them from Pelican.

The correct terminology is "tri-square" or XZN.
Online ontool sells the Stahlwille brand www.ontool.com
motorhead sells Hazet www.motorhead.net
hptools sells Stahlwille www.hptools.com
There are others www.baumtools.com
They all have a fair supply of Porsche related tools, if you don't need it right away.
Or look in Pelicans tool area.
Hazet also has a tool that accepts bits and is long and thin enough to do door hinges (actualy the tool is designed for VW's)
www.hazet.com or www.hazet.de
Also try www.themotoringshop.com the have a wobble socket that may work. And they are locatated around Wallyworld in Florida.
