Red face Oh No...smoke!

It's me again.

Tonight I went to pick up my girfiend for dinner with the p-car. When I started the car with the throttle lever I got a good puff of smoke, as old 2.7L's do. It slowly burned off and ran clean. After dinner I started my car again and got another mild puff of smoke. After driving about 10 minutes I started noticeing some smoke at random as I floored it up to about 5500 RPM. Do keep in mind both cam tower oil lines leak (on order) and valve gaskets slightly leak (on order). Can this be excess oil burning off my new SSI's or more serious?? The smoke seemed slightly blue, however it is night time and dark out, I saw in my rear view mirror. I also was hopeing the smoke was coming from somone else!!

Eric

Is your oil over full? I doubt it is coming from the oil baking off your new SSI's. Unless you have a lot dripping on them.

Hey Matt, no the oil level is not full. The strange thing is it is not all the time. I kept driveing hard in well lit areas. Once in a while it would smoke when I really jumped on it.

Do you drive the car everyday? Do you drive it longer than 45-60 minutes at a time?

My car smokes if:

1. I let it sit to long between drives( 2 weeks or more)

2. It's over full on oil

3. I just do around town 10-15 minute runs.

You need to run these things for a good 1-2 hours, to cook off the condensation in the oil, once in a while. I use my truck to drive back on forth to work, so my car sits for 3-4 days every week. But I try to drive it at least for an hour straight, my first day back from work, to keep everything running good.

Second car purchased 1 month. Doesn't get much use for long periods of time. As you said a couple 20-30 minute joy rides around town. When I bought the car it was sitting for along time.

Why would it smoke intermittantly?

I don't know why it would smoke intermittedly, without being there to see it.

Sound like you need to take it out, and dust out the cylinders. Take it for a nice long drive, once you get the cam lines and the other leaks fixed.

You might want to pay the money to have a leak down & compression check done. It could be oil leaking by one or more rings.

Cool

worn valve guides will suck oil when decelerating in gear..then when you accelerate you see a cloud...worn valve guides can cause big problems....Ron
