Another fuel related question - gauge

My early fuel gauge low fuel light is not working.... Bulb is good. Can anyone explain to me, how does this light actually work? Is it triggered by the float or by the gauge? What should i do to problem solve? Does anyone happen to know how much fuel would be left in the tank when it illuminates?

TIA

Rolls

Here is a link to another techincal post. It gives you an idea how the low fuel light is triggered by a float contact of the fuel tank sening unit in a late 70's porsche. I kind of doubt that is very different in earlied Porsches. I hope it helps.
