VIN stamping on bumpers

Hi,

Just read Mark Haab's 911 Authenticity series and found out that there are VIN stampings found on bumpers of the Carrera's and 930s. Does anyone here know where exactly VIN is found on the bumpers? Other than bumpers and the front compartment, where else can one find the VIN for 911s and 930s from 84-89?

Thanks.

Jay

They're not stampings, but little VIN stickers. On the rear bumper, the sticker was placed by the factory on the outside of the bumper by the plate bracket. Remove the plate and you should see it on an original paint bumper.

For US cars, in 1984 Congress passed a law that required certain new cars (and replacement parts) deemed to be high theft potential to have VIN stickers in various places to (in theory, anyway) prevent chop shops from easily disposing of parts. This included 911, 930 and 928S4's built after 9-1-86.

The little VIN stickers were placed on bumpers, fenders, doors, hood, engine cover and engine/transmission. Original parts to the car show the vehicle VIN. Replacement parts built after that date show a symbol indicating it as a replacement part.

Thanks Tim for the info. My car's had been repainted a couple of times by PO no wonder I couldn't find the the VIN on the bumpers. Would you know how the symbol of the replacement parts looked and whether they were on stickers or embedded on the part?

These numbers are not stamped but written in grease pencil. They are not the vin but the build number. Typically at the top of the door and can only be seen when you remove the door panel.

I'd like to see a photo, or several, of this marking.
