73/74 IROC Coverage
I've looked around quite a bit for coverage of the Porsche races but this is the only video I can find. Its short but cool to see. I understand there is a DVD of the races offered online, though I think they are VHS transfers and similar (bad) quality. I'm thinking of emailing ABC to see if we could convince them to either release some coverage to their YouTube page or better yet offer some DVDs (probably a long shot)

Nice find! Photos, let alone footage seems pretty rare. I remember a few years ago Excellence ran an article exhibiting never-before-published color photos of the IROC cars.
Someone on the board here I think has some more period IROC photos, some color. Maybe he knows of some footage? I think his username is 'URY914' maybe? I've got a copy of a DVD that has a bunch footage of mostly Can-Am races from the early seventies. Don't recall any IROC footage sneaking in there though. Any footage from that era of racing seems pretty rare. Good luck! |

I have a February 1974 Road & Track magazine that has a 5 page article about the first 3 races at Riverside & heading to Daytona for the final race to determine the overall winner.
Has 2 color photos & a B&W of of the 6 finalists on the podium. |
anything you can scan? I have an old panoroma with an IROC article from the era...

If there was a DVD, it would have been made from early tapes and then transferred to disk. It might show all of the Riverside races from the TV broadcast and the Daytona final. I also understand ABC does not known where its copy of the original footage is (rumor).

I'd never seen King Richard's eyes....that was a first.

Snap,
PM me. I can't see the YouTube at work, but if I could I would be able to tell you if it came from the same source as the DVD, if there was one. I understand that it's possible the son of one of the drivers recorded the series and that was the source material for the DVD. The son is now a prominent driver in his own right, mostly in DP cars. |
There is a little known bootleg DVD of the season. It is recorded from a VHS (or beta) source of the original race airing on ABC. Pretty poor quality, but fun to watch anyway. I have a copy. The Motorsport Collector has them.

Oh man, I would love to see some high quality footage of these races! To the OP, did you ever hear back from ABC? Thanks.

Probably the best 10 minutes of racing footage I've seen... that was fantastic thanks for sharing!

This is when there were true champions in the field, versus the last few years of the IROC series which were pathetic in the talent pool and consisted mostly of NASCAR grid fillers and definitely not worthy of being called champions...

Like Scott said, TMC has the DVD. It is crap quality because home video tape wasn't even available in 1973/74. Who knows what the original source was - might have been a camera recording the TV screen  No matter, it is a fascinating DVD.

I have this 68S that was rsr'd in 73. I has legit rims dated 73. The previous owner tells me personally that he had the bodywork done in SoCal in 73 and he drove it at Riverside and other tracks at that time. . He can't remember where the work was done. He thought it was done by the guys that did the IROC race cars . Does anyone have a guess whom I could call to trace this story ? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1448259311.jpg

The IROC cars were built by the factory, not modified by a shop in SoCal. Not sure if this is what you were asking, but figured I would state the obvious. Pretty cool looking Targa you have there.
