Question 46mm camshaft nut removal tool options

I tried my 1-13/16 12pt. crowsfoot that I bought form McMaster-Carr to take off the 46mm camshaft nut and it's not beefy enough. It speads open when I put a lot of force on it. I need to buy either a 1-13/16" six point impact socket from McMaster-Carr @ $15.69 or the very expensive 46mm crowsfoot @ $80.

I did a search on the board and read up that with the flywheel locked and using an impact wrench with a six point impact socket and wrench that the nut can be safely removed.

When it comes time to torque the nut with the socket, can the chain withstand the force when 111 ft-lbs of torque is applied to the nut?

On the left side, I would have to clamp the sprocket support arm to the timing cover case with either vice-grips or a c-clamp.

Thanks!

John

an impact wrench and 46mm socket gets them off easily without a flywheel lock. you can make a spacer on the left side to take the place of the tensioner, or just use channel locks between the lever and top of the housing, as you use the impact wrench. a cam holder, and crowfoot and torquewrench gets them back together. the 1-13/16 unit might work to tighten, but would be stressed more to loosen the nut. don't torque without holding the cam.

Thanks John. I didn't want to buy that 46mm crawfoot but it looks like I have to. Thanks! I made my own cam holding tool out of a coupling for a pneumatic actuated 6" ball valve. It holds the cam safely and securely.

Do you have any used 46mm crawfoots kicking around that you would be interested in selling?

John
