whats the deal with german vinyl

not sure i understand the big deal about German vinyl... i have had lots of German cars and the vinyl all sucks (cracks) after a few years. yet, every one pontificates on the greatness of "German" vinyl. i do know that the backing is usually a lot thicker, but again it eventually seems to "crack" i have had domestic cars with domestic interiors that have never cracked. my theory is that they (Germans) develop their plastics for COLD weather and the US is not as cold....ergo, sun breaks it down faster.... can anyone help me to understand???? i am open to an education....

Not sure about who supplies for Porsche...it seems of avg quality. Mercedes MB Tex, which has given German leatherette its reputation, is really fantastic. I've had Mercedes with MB tex car seats look as new after 15 years of use...not even creased.

I read a long time ago that German automotive plastic parts are not really specified for the same extreme temperature and smog conditions that ar common in the US. Is that corrrect? On the other hand, all my original 1979 plastic material is in practically perfect condition. But I live in Southern California and the car rests in a cool garage.

my upholstery guy was really impressed with the german vinyl i ordered for my interior project. he has a pretty big furniture and car/boat shop and said it was some of the nicest he had ever worked with.
