How many miles on a new engine before mobil 1
How many miles does everyone go before using a synthetic in their new engines. I'm at about 1000 miles, so far I have just run castrol in it. I suppose I should check the threads!

Doesn't the factory put it in all their new motors?

Indeed the factory does install Mobil 1 as a factory fill. But I've also read expert opinions stating that Dino oil is better for the initial break in. So, IF I were in that situation? I'd probably cover my bases...use Dino oil the first few thousand, then make the switch. But during that initial few thousand, I'd probably be a fanatic & change the Dino oil a few times... Dino oil is cheap...

Just hit 100 miles on my rebuild and changed the oil last night. I'm running a straight 30W dino for now, will keep that going for at least 1K miles or so. I may do another change at 250 then again at 500. I'm seating new rings so I want to get the ring flecks out of the oil. I got a few pieces in the magnetic trap on the sump, nothing in the bottom of the oil tank magnet. Not sure where the material came from but it's not a significant amount.

My plan is to run Dino (Castrol 20W-50) for two changes, and switch to Mobil 1 after 3,500 miles. Looking to do two filter changes to the one oil change. I've read other opinions on a thread search.

Which brought up another thought...I've seen ads for powerful magnets one can wrap around the oil filter to trap small magnetic bits...I always considered them a bit snake oilish. But during a break in period? May be a benefit there. Has anybody tried the device?

I'm doing a transfussion from dino to Mobil One on my 3.2.
( Doesn't leak a drop, est. 60k of engine ) Just passed the 2k mark. Here's the instructions I got from a VERY respected source. 500 miles : Change Oil and Filter 1500 miles : Change Oil and Filter Then regular scheduled oil changes. Doesn't help with your break in question. Just a data point. Paul, does the factory still burn the engines in ? Seems it was 4 hours at different RPM's or something like that. I wonder if they use Mobil One on the burn in ?

I suspect your very respected source is Steve Weiner, because 1/that's exactly what he told me, and 2/he's very respected. Especially by me.

Thanks guys, you all pretty much supported my thoughts. I was going to go ahead and run the dino oil for another 1000 or 1500 miles( including a few changes) and switch over to mobil 1.
Don't tell my wife though, I used to only change the oil in her mustang maybe every 10-15000 miles. It ran great, 140,000 worth until someone ran a red light and removed the frontend! Great board! Dennis H. 72 911E |

Paul, I've got a friend who rebuilt his Dodge van's V8 240,000 mi. ago and lined the oil pan with magnets. The engine is just now wearing out. He must have done something right.
I know--put magnets on the cool-collar and you'd have everything, cleaner and cooler oil! Wayne... |

I know it's sounds silly, but there must be something to the magnet thing...If there wasn't something to it, Porsche wouldn't make magnetic drain plugs, would they????

Dino oil suspends particles better, so I'd say it would be wise to use it for a thousand miles or so before converting to synthetic.
I understand that Porsche uses Mobil 1 as a factory fill, and believe me, I'm in no position to challenge their engineering, but I wonder if they run the engine after final assembly with the synthetic, or run it with something else for "X" amount of time, and then fill with synthetic....... Anyone know the process?

I have always done the first oil change at 150-200 miles, and again at 1000 miles. The first change is the equivalent of the factory's 1 hour break-in run on the dyno, and the second corresponds with the first official service ... where the cam timing used to be rechecked/reset, and all of the other systematic checks of things that aren't done anymore!
At 1000 miles ... feel free to change to Mobil 1!
