964 Starter Motor Pinion Size

Does anyone have a 964 starter motor (1990 to 1998) laying around and could measure the outside diameter of the pinion gear and count the number of teeth for me? I have been experiencing problems with the starter motor engagement on my G50/50 and think it may have something to go with the bell housing being off a G50/52.

Richard.

Here is a picture of the starter motor that I am interested in (not mine, downloaded the image on line). The part number is 911-604-102-AX-M14

I really want to know how many teeth the pinion gear has (9 to 10) and the outside diameter of the pinion gear. Anyone have one of these laying around their garage that they could measure for me?

Täname teid rollingjack.

This may solve a mystery that I have had for the past 2 months on my project. I installed a new gearbox that I purchased off the PP forum and was told it is a G50/50. The starter motor has been crewing off the teeth on my ring gear - so far I have gone through 2 ring gears and several engine drops and have purchased 2 different starter motors. On checking the casting numbers on the bell housing I actually have a G50/52 (964 /993) which your measurements have confirmed, takes a different starter motor that has a larger diameter pinion gear. The pinion on my 915 starter has 9 teeth and is about 24mm diameter.

So if I put a 964 starter motor in my problems should be solved.

Cheers,
Richard.
