windshield wiper assembly
I have a 1974 911 I am reworking. I can see that there is a frayed wire (insulation gone) leading to the wiper motor. I have the blower out of the car and the wiper arms off of the wiper shafts on the top side. The entire assembly seems loose (will wiggle) but something is holding it in place.
Have any of you removed the wiper assembly completely, and if so, can you describe the steps you followed to get it out? Thanks

You must, believe it or not, remove the dash pad. There is a leather strap that is attached to the wiper assembly that has a bolt or screw passing through it that attaches to the metal under the dash pad near the speaker opening. At least thats the way it is on my 75. I had to put my dash in twice because of this. Hope This Helps

can't you attack it from under the front trunk area, after removing any existing vent ducting and housing? That's how I did it in my '88....

dalesflesburg,
How did you make out with this project? I am preparing to pull my assembly as well. I believe the linkage broke as I heard a clunk and then the driver side wiper turned and dragged across the windshield. Any pointers? |

This is not one for the faint of heart. You have to remove the heater blower and air box. This has to be done from the front trunk, while setting or laying in the trunk. Once all of the hoses, wires etc are out of the way, you can look at the wiper arm assembly. There is a plug in wiring connection which is easy, and then a leather strap. At the far end of the strap is a nut which you need to remove. Once that is off the assembly comes out easily. This assembly is very well built and should last for 100 years. I would make sure it is not something else before taking it out. For example, have the ribs inside the wiper arms stripped off and are the shafts turning? I would not doubt that if the wiper arms were frozen to the windshield under solid ice, that the motor might be strong enough to strip out the aluminum center of the wiper arms.

daleflesburg,
Thanks for the reply. My car is mostly a part ( more or lesss a full restoration) including the items you mention. About the only thing left in is the dash. I just havent gotten to taking that out yet. But it will be out shortl. I am sure the blades didnt freeze or anything of that nature as it happened during the summer and all the splines are intact. A light mist of rain started and on the second or third swipe of the wiper I heard a clunk and the driver side stopped moving the passenger side came across and hit the drivers side and went across the top of the driver arms causing it to fall over and pushed it across the windshiled which sounded like finger nails across a chalk board. leaving a scratch. I removed the arms and turned on the wipers the driver side spindle wasnt moving. So I am now trying to take the assembly out to repair or replace it, but I can not get it to fully come out of the holes in the cowl. the motor keeps getting hung up, as if I need to remove it from the assembly first. |

Mine all came out in one unit. I did have to place a block of wood on top of the spindles and tap it to break it loose. There is a rubber washer above and below the cowl and over the years that rubber gets very stuck to things and very stiff.

There are two, as I recall, 8mm bolts that can be accessed behind the speedometer that hold the whole kit & kaboodle to the cowl. Once you remove the speedo, they are right there.
