Show me your... a/c controls!

I'm in the middle of redoing my interior. I keep thinking about deleting the center console but I don't know what to do with the A/C controls.

Let's see your ideas! Show 'em if you got 'em!

Do a search-console.

A/C Control

I did something a little different. Since I no longer had foglights and dont use the rear defrost, I used those holes for the fan and temp control for my A/C. Mine is a '76 so no center vent, just the one hose under the dash for A/C.

In the picture above there is a circular depression for a switch behind the wiper stalk on the dash. I have a rotary switch for cooling on the outside with a fan speed switch in the middle. (Like a stereo knob with volume and balance)
Here is a pic. (crappy one but you get the idea)

Timmy2,

That's a pretty slick idea!

Very cool (pun intended, too).

Can't claim it as my idea, car arrived in my driveway like that.
I believe it was dealer installed when it was imported into the US and resided in Arizona for a while.
Silver Rotary rheostat outside, 3 position speed switch (black) inside.

Console delete

When I reworked the interior in my SC, I also wanted to delete the console. My solution was to make a panel that fit where the ashtray was located and mount the two a/c controls there. Here is a picture.

The panel is made from a piece of sheet aluminum (available at your local Lowes) cut and bent to fit. The existing wires and tube were just long enough to fit. Hope this helps.

Tim,

Have you done any work on installing your fuse panel yet? Please send me a picture when it's done.

Fred,

I haven't yet. That will be towards the end of the project. I'm also going to be installing a DRL module, a quick disconnect for the battery and running power for an amp so I figured I'd do all that stuff at the same time. I'll keep you posted!

tirwin 02-18-2012 09:31 AM

Fred, I think I'm going to do exactly what you did with the A/C controls. I just don't think I'm going to be happy with the interior if I can't get rid of the console.

My 78 had the dealer installed controls between the seats just behind the console.

Thor, that's a good idea too! Hmmm... Wonder where one could find a box like that? I suppose fabrication is always an option.

I could do this OR Fred's idea. Either way, I'm going to fab something to replace the ashtray and add a mounting bracket from Pro Fit International to have a place to mount my phone.
