Auto-X School in SF

I just got a call that I'm next in line for the auto-x school this weekend @ Candlestick (sorry - 3Com)

Anyone here going?

I'm on the fence about shuffling my weekend around at the last minute.

A> there's only one PCA auto-x scheduled for our area this summer, and that's tentative; The SCCA auto-x's were jam-packed last year, and will only be worse this year. Standing around all day in the hot sun for 4 minutes of seat time is looking less and less attractive...

B> after 2 track days this year, an autocross is going to feel like a game of "Pong" compared to "NFS"

Hey Thom,

I'm instructing at the auto-x school this weekend. This is the first GGR school that I've taught at, but I've heard rave reviews in the past.

How much autocross experience do you have? Unless you are a very seasoned autocrosser, I'll bet that you'll learn enough by Sunday that you are glad you did the last-minute-shuffle.

I've been autocrossing for over 10 years, and I still love it. I've recently gotten on the track, too. But I don't think that autocrossing has lost any of its appeal to me - I mean that it doesn't seem too slow or like Pong

Quite the contrary, the turns come at you so fast autocrossing that you tend to be MUCH busier in the car. You want to learn how to quickly and smoothly go from braking to acceleration, learn how to slide the car (or recover from a slide) or learn how to "read" a track, autocrossing is still the best forum in my opinion.

I hope you decide to come out to Candlestick (3com my ass!). I'd be happy to meet you and see your car after seeing so many of your posts here.

Look me up if you decide to attend Dean Thomas - white Cabriolet with the rollbar. I'm also towing the timing trailer, so you can find me near the tow vehicle.

Hope to see you out there,

Dean

I have about 1.5 seasons of autocrossing, with PCA and SCCA. Last summer I was out about every other weekend.

Autocrossing *is* fun, but I'm not seeing a favorable driving to standing-around-with-my-thumb-in-my-nose ratio any longer. Kinda the difference between copping a quick feel or holding out for a roll in the hay.

Yeah, no doubt that the running-around-chasing-cones factor is a big downside.

It's not everyone's bag, Baby! Rumor has it the shelby club is running a track day on Sunday at Thunderhill. Perhaps that might be a better alternative for you.

I've heard there are close to 60 people on the waiting list for this weekend for the autoX school, so I'm sure someone will step in if you decide to do something else.

Whatever you do, make sure you drive. It's good for your soul.

Later,

Dean
