Thin flange or thick flange heat exchangers??

Hi,

I need to buy new heat exchangers on a budget. So I am looking for a set of used ones. Not sure what I need. Can anyone let me know? Thin or thick flange?

I have an 82SC?

I will then post a WTB add in the used parts forum...

Thank you!
Boris

Looks like thick flange to me but they are so rust I can't really see the corner of the flanges from the picture.
BTW - You can use thin flange exhaust on a thick flange car with the possible addition of some spacers/washers and cleaning up the threads. So if you see a killer deal don't let that stop you.

Be very careful, using heat and penetrating lube, to pull them off. You don't want to snap a stud and mess up your day. Use copper nuts when you put them back on to future proof the install.

1982 is thick flange. I just removed mine and replaced with stainless steel exchangers. I am selling my old exchangers, if you are interested.

Definitely thick. I found out the hard way mounting early thin flange exhaust on an 82 sc engine. I couldn't figure out why the barrel nuts wouldn't tighten without the hex head socket slipping out

Did the 84 3.2 Carrera come with thick flange HE's also? I have to pull them off to clean the leaked oil out of them and will have to replace the Barrel nuts and Lock nuts. I will be installing new oil tubes while they are off.
The HE part # is 930-211-029-00 (both sides are the same)
Thanks

The 80s Carreras are thick flange. Replace the nuts with copper plated nuts. It should really be a requirement...

I just removed my thick flange exchangers last week. They are for sale if you are interested. I changed over to stainless.

So, I get that the SS ones are better due to longevity, but are there any other benefits to SS HEs?

Some of the posts are confusing SSIs which are equal length stainless versions of early dual outlet HEs....with Stainless versions of SC wrap around HEs that are single outlet.....just sayin'......

you can use the thin flange if you want. Just use spacers or get nuts, or what i did, allen heads. (have to remove studs to use allens)
