Fan air deflector 85-911

What happens if one when reinstalling the alternator on an 85 -911 does not install the winged deflector that is behind the fan and attached to the alternator.

Is that thing a vital part? Sounds dum I know but the thing is a &**&*^$#@!! to reinstall

Thanks

mflo

need it

the deflector is required to make sure air gets to all cylinders without it, the air will take the path of least resistance and you will more than likely burn up a cylinder.
It should not be that hard to put it on? slip it over the wires, then wire it up
then bolt it on.

Does the orientation matter? Sounds like if it wasn't clocked properly, it might not direct the air in the manner you suggest is important.

Yes the orientation matters. It's pretty obvious which way it goes. The cone is offset and the hole for the wires goes at the 6 o'clock position. The air deflectors blow the air toward the 123 side.

Just a suggestion, try soldering on additional lengths of wiring of the same gauge, use shrink tube, not electrical tape. I did this for a few wires in my car. One of my biggest peeves about these cars is that they don't give you an extra inch or two of wiring to easily work on the things.

When I replaced my voltage regulator I had to dremel the deflector to make it fit. The new OEM replacement VR had a slightly thicker dimension. That may be the issue?
