Post Popping sound when I lift or downshift

Well my car has a pretty loud popping, sometimes burrbling sound when I lift at high RPMs, and when I downshift.

Looking under the car I see some condensation leakage at the head and heat exchanger junction.

I plan to tackle that (take off my heat exchagers check for level flanges...maybe double up on gaskets) soon, but I am wondering if it is a dreaded broken head stud...detination...I have heard of all these but I am not sure what each of these sound like....

thanks for your help

MJ

The broken head stud sound is more of a Rapining sound under accelreation...

others who have experienced this problem can give a more accurate discription what you descriibe sounds more like an exhaust leak...

Many of us are curious about what symptoms accompany a broken head stud and whether this can cause exhaust popping. If I missed John Walker's remarks about this I am sorry because I would like to hear his observations.

I have a broken rear exhaust stud on #4 and I drive the car. I have plenty of exhaust popping on deceleration. There is another sound made under heavy load that sounds a little more like clapping, and this is the sound of the head beating on the top of the cylinder.

Back to the exhaust popping: Conventional wisdom says that exhaust popping means an exhaust leak. I suppose a broken stud could cause this, but I'm not convinced at all. I do not necessarily agree with others that a lean mixture can cause exhaust popping. A lean mixture can contribute to exhaust popping I suppose, and lean mixtures do cause popping in the intake. But the botom line is I believe your exhaust popping, and mine, are cause by an exhaust leak, probably at the head.

You should count your head stud barrel nuts though, just to be sure. I have 23. You should have 24.
