Broken odometer/tripometer

Finally decided to put Wayne's book to good use last night. Took my speedo apart. Yep, I found a broken gear (the size of a dime with half the teeth missing off of it). How much does these cost to repair? I would rather have a pro to rebuild this thing. I'm a little leary about getting a new one because I would the mileage to remain on the odometer. Thanks in advance.

odometer fix

I just repaired my odometer/trip counter 2 weeks ago. I bought the gear, and carefully took the gauge apart, and fixed it in 20 minutes. The hardest part is taking the face off the gauge. I think the gear was $40. There are 2 ads in "Excellence" that you can get the gears from. One you have to buy a set of 4 gears for $65. There are also odometer repair shops that will do the job for $110-130 + shipping. I am in Ohio, and found a repair shop locally. I used Wayne's 101 Projects Book to get the "know how" and then was able to adapt that to my situation. The cause of the teeth missing, is resetting the trip counter while moving. ALWAYS, I am told, to reset it when stopped.

Thanks Phil, I'll check that out. You're right, that seal around the front of the gauge was a pain to remove.

That is what is great about this forum...All the others have probably fixed or repaired the things that I will eventually need to do to my car. There is always someone willing to help out, and whenever I can, I try to as well. Here is my email, if you have any other questions: iteachdirt@webtv.net

Hey Gang,

I had the same problem.
I took it apart to find that what looked like a gear from a slot car had stripped. A couple of phone calls and found that I could
buy the gear for something like $40.00.

I thought about it and figureg with my luck I would foul it up
and end up having to spend the money after I bent the speedo needle or something else.

I had my speedo done by Palo Alto Speedo,
they had a flat rate of $125.00 to repair.

I removed it and sent it to them, they had it back to
me in 3 days. Total cost including shping was $128.30.

I sent it to them priority mail for under 4 bucks.
I am more than pleased with the results and service.

To prevent this from happening you must be completely stopped
before you reset the trip odometer, if you take it apart it becomes clear how this can happen.

Good Luck,

$40 seems like a pretty good mark up for a little gear.
Anyone care to venture a guess if any other European cars of the same vintage share this gear? If so, there may be a shortage of Speedos in the junk yards:-)

My list of possibles might include VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and 924.

If we can find one of these gears in a common car to the pick-a-parts, the price will come down.

I didn't have an odo problem, but I just adjusted my speedo in a '77 w/electric pluse input..so far so good..I have to recheck the settings because I clocked my bride in a new Honda Accord w/the cruse control on..and who knows what happens to a female operating machinery??.....Ron

Odometer gear

I have a 79' 930 with a broken odometer gear. Can someone advise where I can find the gear?
Thankshttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pray.gif

Look in the previous messages for the 2 speedo/odometer repair places in CA. I bought the gear in Cinci, and fixed it myself. They can also do the work in shop, for $130 he said.

Contact Ken Farler, and he will give you the number of the Speedo shop. It is really close to I-75, and I-275. Here is Ken's number: 513.779.6515
Tell him you need the speedo worked on, and who he reccomends in the Cinci area.
