shipping a shell cross country

has anyone shipped a car cross country???

I am thinking about a shell in VT...and wondering how much this would cost to ship to LA, CA

And since it is a roller there is not engine...don't know if this has an effect on the shipping

MJ

Interesting you should ask. Been looking at getting a new "old" 911 from LA to North Carolina. Options so far range from $600 stuck in the back of a moving van, to $1300 on a 2 car, open air truck, to $2,500 in a luxury suite on the Queen Mary (actually a multi-car, covered carrier.)

From thoes that did this before, recommendations on carriers and services, please.

Shipped mine from LA to OK...open air...in the weather (covered with road grime when it arrived) cost $600. Make sure shippers are licensed, bonded, insured, etc. Check their references (make the phone calls). Good luck!

Wow, it's hard to imagine that you can't find what you need here in LA. What year model car is it. I may know of one locally.

Maybe more of a question to the concours guys than racecar folks, but both of you may haul your car on an open-air trailer. What do you do to protect it from the elements while it rides behind you? I would think that a standard car cover would be too loose and the flapping would scratch the car. Any and all ideas appreciated.

I remember reading where someone wrapped their car in cellophane. They got one of those big rolls.

Did this recently. The car had no interior, but had wiring harness intact, but no hood. We wrapped 6 mil plastic over the hood area, through the windshield opening and around the dash to protect the wiring. More plastic over the missing deck lid. We went through a couple of rolls of tape that is like electrical tape, but two inches wide. Sticks just as good as duct tape, but is more flexible, and leaves no residue when removed. The buyer shipped me his set of wheels & tires. Shipping company wanted a steering wheel- Did you know that the wheel from an old Volkswagen bus will fit a 911? Local wrecking yard did, and gave me a really ugly one. We decided against covering the entire car with the heavy plastic for two reasons. The shipping company needed to be able to use the steering wheel, and we did not want to trap any water inside the car. We figured that it would be better to let it get wet and dry out easily instead. Cost from Seattle area to the east coast was about $1200.

I am having a car shipped from just outside LA to Detroit for right around $1200, using InterCity. It's a closed truck deal with about 1/2 dozen cars in the truck. I think the usual price for straight delivery would be $1500 - the reduced rate is for going "standby", which sounds like it takes an extra week or so. I can let you know how it works out when the car gets here.

Oops, forgot - I think it will run you a little more for a non-running car.
