NickP - How do you like the 2.5 MFI? As you know my car now running a larger EFI motor, which produces substantial power. But I'm curious what the chassis/suspension would be like with the "original" configuration.

I drove your car when it had the 3.2 SS engine in it and thought the cars overall set up was fantastic. In particular, the gearing was very well suited for that motor, the brakes were great and the suspension was both compliant, well planted and very communicative. I wanted my car to feel the same.

I believe my car is close in character to that, Scott strongly urged me to set my car up exactly the same as yours, which I did. Now that I've logged 3000 miles on the car which includes a track day, lots of canyon runs and normal around town driving, I'll say the suspension is really a highlight of the car.

With my only real frame of reference being my fairly stock 73S ( the RS engine, 18mm sways and 7" rear wheels deviate from stock) I could not believe how well planted the ST is by comparison. The car put the biggest grin on my face while turning laps at Thunderhill West a few weeks ago. The amount of grip and how flat the car ran around the corners was really amazing. Last weekend I took a spirited run to Palomar Mountain on my favorite back country loop with 5 modern 911's and a Cayman R. The tighter the turns the better my car did, I definitely held my own but I was pounding the 2.5 between 2nd and 3rd at 5-7000 rpms to keep in the power all morning. Freaking awesome. The suspension really is well suited for this, and those fat Michelin TB 15's are sublime. I doubt they will make it 7000 miles. Ok, the brand new GT3 left me like I was standing still and when we got to the bottom of the hill, the GT3 has smoke coming out of all 4 wheels.

I think the high rev character of the 2.5 is well suited for the suspension and brakes on my car. It feels light and also well planted. Get to 3500 rpm's and the car wanted to GO. Same with the brakes; if I were to get a bigger, heavier engine with more power I believe I may overwhelm the standard S brakes I currently have. My direction was to stay true to the ethos of the ST's from the day which was a focus on being lightweight.

Come to SoCal and I'll throw you the keys so you can compare them! Or, if you are going to Monterey in August, I'll be there for the Concours on the street in Carmel through Werks on Friday. Lots of good roads to drive....
