cat converter question

I have a 1991 911. I don't have to have smog testing on this car locally.

Can I remove the cat converter and install a bypass pipe with a 02 sensor and the car still run well?

Or will this affect the fuel mixture or other engine management systems and turn on the check engine light. Thanx! L

Also, you might like the "cleaner" look but be prepared for a bit more noise. Don't sell or discard the cat till you know you like the result overall.
I like the cat bypass pipe on my 87. Might also consider a "pre-muffler" vs bypass.
My car is definately louder inside, no more talk radio with my hearing.
