Help Needed 3.0 install oil line fittings pics added
I'm doing a top end rebuild on a 1973 911 with a 3.0 sc engine. Question, the car has a mocal oil thermostat with 12an lines and the old ones were shot. How do I adapt (or purchase) the two oil lines from the tank and engine to that have 30mm fittings on one end and 12an on the other at the thermostat? The lines I removed are fabric and I don't see a part offered on the pelican site.
Thanks ![]() ![]()

![]() There really is no substitute for the original Porsche oil cooler thermostat & lines, especially on a street application. In the past we have used the Mocal thermostats in race car apps with mixed results. There is no pressure relief valve in them, and in cold weather on startup there can be so much pressure build up when revving to keep the motor running to blow the oil cooler. This has happened to our customers more than once. Its really messy & the coolers are pretty expensive. Also, the common AN -12 hoses are too small for full oil flow. On our GT2 turbo we used -20 on the suction side from the tank into the motor and -16 to & from the cooler along with a factory thermostat. I like to think we have learned from our experiences, and no longer use the less expensive alternative. Len

![]() Kodioneill- Since you have a 73 w the 3.0 SC motor, your fitting needs may be different, but here's what I have recently made up for the 911 C's & SC's.............. ![]() The photo above is of course before final fitment & crimping and on a SC here in our shop. We are in a test phase right now, with two Pelicans installing & providing input. They both have early cars w updated motors. So far things are working well. Perhaps I can help you with yours also.. Len Thank You very much. This has the Mocal T stat. an12 lines to the front and because it's a 73 the PO installed some strange looking cooler. What would you suggest I do to make the entire system right? If you need photos of the set up I can post some.
Mike

![]() Hi Mike- Tell us more about your Porsche. Your intended use will determine the way to proceed. Shaun 84 Targa used the later model factory thermostat, oil lines & cooler from a 84-89 91 Carrera on his 73. This is by far the best setup for the street. However, for a 73 it requires removal of the RH battery box (you have two), and you may not want to do this. An alternate plan is to use the same factory thermostat & lines, but with a center mounted Setrab oil cooler within a RS type front bumper/spoiler. Personally, this is my preference. Lots of info on this here with Pelican Parts BBS. For new, the factory thermostat assy is available from our host, as are the Elephant Racing finned oil lines that run under the rockers & up to the front fender. You may also be able to find a complete Front cooler system used & posted on Pelican for a reasonable price. I certainly can make up the connecting hoses to your specific needs, both up front to a center mounted cooler, and at the rear. The engine & exhaust combination will determine what is needed, the Hi-Clearance hose setup shown above is just one of many ways to do this. Please email me for more details. Easy way.
Goodrich makes 30mm to12AN adapter fittings+others One goes on the oil tank and one goes one the engine oil line. braided hose with AN fittings go from mocal to eng oil line and from tank to mocal. If the thermostat is working right you should not be getting cold high pressure oil to the cooler. I agree that the factory cannot be beat but if you want something that works and is not too expensive we have run B&M racing trans coolers as oil coolers in a race car since 1997 with no issues. They are steel and not alluminum so not as frail as most coolers and are durable. the approx 12x12in one in the 911 is around 120.00. That may seem strange to you but I will say that since we used them I have seem many of them in various sizes on many different race cars over the years. |

Thanks guys. I rebuilt this engine for a customer. I't a 83 SC in a 73 as stated. The car is going to be sold after the resto. We still want it to look good but we're not going to want to spend a lot on it. I've attached some photos of the cooler, lines, tstat as you can see we have SSI's and the backdated oil line. What would guy's suggest?
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some gratuitous shots of engine before rebuild. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for your input guy's. Mike

Nice job. engine looks great.
I don't think there is anything wrong with that cooler.sufficiant to cool a 3.0. Easiest way to go would be my suggestion. two adapter fittings,2 pieces braided hose with AN fittings. your done. Somehow they attached the cooler lines from the front to the thermostat. I think if you undo that the thermostat is no good anymore and you will need two more lines and adapters to run to the front cooler. braided hose that long is in the hundreds. |

![]() This looks like part of a 'Lempke Turbatrol" (sp???) oil cooler kit offered way back when. In interests of keeping costs down for a planned sale of the car, just replace what is necessary. If its a "keeper", that is a totally different story. porwolf- They are the "Norma" type clamps that do not cut into rubber hoses, and are offered by our host. I use them while "mocking-up" the oil hoses when building a new system. Once all clearance & fitment issues are satisfied, we build a fixture and crimp the hoses in their natural position. Happy to send photos if you email me. Can't seem to send photos via PMs. Len
