Question on Mocal cooler retro-fit
Hi guys - need some coaching here. My '74 has a 3.2 and does not have a front oil cooler.
If I go with the Mocal kit from our host I know I'll need to buy the oil hoses to make the front/rear run from the engine to the cooler and back. What else is typically needed or a good idea if I am doing this? I am not sure how my car was modified to only use the rear cooler, so if I need to dig around some coaching on what I am looking for would (as a newbie) be great. Thanks! |

I used the factory thermostat and lines from the engine and oil tank. Forward of that I used 16 AN lines to a RX-7 cooler. I sourced the lines on flea-bay from a nascar team and they are nice mesh type lines with An type fittings. I got adapters for the AN fittings to the factory thermostat from Jerry Woods. Not a difficult project.
My hot rod 3.0 never really got very hot even with only the engine mounted cooler, no more than half way up the temp guage. That's not hot enough to open the thermostat very often. Is your engine running hot?

some 74s did not have a front cooler
search out a factory system in the classifieds buying all new braided hose with everything else can be more money than a good used system. |

FWIW The oil therm in the left rear wheelwell opens at 194 degrees or thereabouts.
If you don't block off the airflow and have a fan you'll not get the most out of the package. The fan and forced air makes a huge diff. Also have the small airscoop in the running light position. Fan runs off a switch on the dash and that set up will drop oil temps visibly. |

I had the Mocal trombome-replacement setup with my 3.2 and it really needs a fan. There is probably a creative way to do it, but I couldn't devise a way to duct a lot of airflow to the cooler (which a radiator style absolutely needs). My cooler had a Spal fan on it that I could control from the dash. The fan was great piece of mind on those 95F summer days. The Mocal w/fan would keep the 3.2 at 190F or less on even the hottest days.
I will add that this setup was not adequate on the track. I have since installed a larger front-bumper mounted cooler that works much better than the fender mount.

go withthe factory thermo/bypass
I think the factory thermostat and lines are the way to go because the lines willhelp cool, but more importantly the pressure bypass will help keep the cooler from seeing excessive pressures. My 74 shows over 100 pounds cold. The Mocal thermostats do not have this bypass.
I scored a good used pair of factory lines from elephant, (take offs from one of their finned upgrades). I'm not yet tracking the car, so figured saving a few bucks on used lines would help. chris |

Thanks guys - so it sounds like just lines to/from the additional cooler plus the cooler set up.
She does run warm as-is. |
