Check your cupboards, any soupcans in there? Seriously, chances of it being out there somewhere just looking for it's engine are slim at best. What was seller's story? Best detective lead would be start there, going backwards. Once again, though, nobody just parts-out a good early 'S'.

Well, the new guy does raise an important issue: is there a way to track down the original chassis for an engine using the engine number?

I don't know if anybody outside the factory could. But the factory should be able to. Before the cardex thing existed, I wrote the factory. Asked for info on my car, giving the VIN #. I received a polite response, listing everything a cadex says, and more. Included in this info was the engine number. So, reverse searching could come up with the car the engine came in. For What it's worth, PCA's "PORSCHE FAMILY TREE' Lists '72S Coupe engine serial numbers as 632001-6322586. '72S Targa engine numbers run 6329001-6329147. Always puzzled me, since there were 1750 "S" coupes and 989 "S" Targas made world wide in 1972.

Hey, Paul ... those 147 engines in the '9000' group of sequence numbers were 911/63 engines with the Sportomatic oil pump!

It gets even stranger, though! According to the spec book numbers ... the same ones PCA listed ... there were a total of 2739 911S bodies assembled for the '72 production, TOTAL, but their sequence numbers indicate a total of only 2733 'S' engines of both 911/53 and 911/63 types built! So, what happened to the six 911S bodies that didn't get 911S engines?

RS prototypes, do you suppose?

Warren, thanks for the education. Gotcha on the sportamatics. And those 6 bodies with no engines? I agree, had to be "skunkworks" of one kind or another. Who'd have thought that 30 years hence, nit pickers like you and I would look at numbers and even care? BTW, since it now takes me a good 15 minutes, with my dial in, to read a string, and then make a post. Am I the only guy having this v e r y s l o w t o t h e p o i n t o f m a d n e s s problem? Gosh, I have faith in Wayne, but I sure hope he fixes it soon.

No, Paul, you aren't the only one having incredibly-long reload times from the Pelican server! It has been BAD every since the last outage, but TODAY the browser stalls or locks up 29 times out of 30 attempts at refreshing! What was taking 1-2 minutes to refresh since Wayne moved the server takes 3-5 minutes to refresh or post ... IF it is the lucky 1 out of 30 attempts!

No problems with other sites, either!

Hey Warren, didn't they make 6 ST racing cars in 72, and wouldn't they have had the 2.5 racing engines in them?

Just sitting here and rememberd seeing somthing like that in the Sarkley R-RS-RSR book.

That would explain the "missing" engines.
