Shock Replacement Advice for a 3.2
My 88 3.2 is showing its 190k on the clock every time I go over a bump - very rough ride. The car has 17" Cups and I've never changed the shocks or bushings since I've had the car the past 7 years, though the tie rods were changed when I first got the car. I believe the shocks are originals.
I'm looking for a smooth ride. Don't need Lincoln-Town-Car smooth, but smooth. I've done some research here via the search button and am thinking with starting out with front shock replacement (Bilsteins), then new spring plate and control-arm bushings. Will I see a significant difference with just the front shocks? In other cars I'd say it's an obvious yes, but not sure with the P-car. My inclination is yes. Thanks!

If you currently have Bilsteins, you can actually send them back for a rebuild, if I am not mistaken.
Not expensive at all.

Do both ends at the same time. When you hit a bump with the front wheels, the rear shocks absorb some of the impact as well.
A set of neatrix (rubber) a-arm and spring plate bushings will only set you back about $100. Here's the bilstein service page (if you have Bilsteins). http://www.bilsteinus.com/products/search-service/service.html

My '84 3.2 came from the factory with Bilsteins (shown on the windows sticker as "SPORT SHOCK ABSORBERS"). After 155k, they are still original and deliver what I consider to be an acceptable ride. Is it "smooth" by your definition? I don't know. I'd call it firm and controlled, but not harsh.

I'd replace the front suspension bushings first. After that many miles and years, odds are you're metal to metal with your front A arms. Check your shocks and get them revalved if need be.
