Question Engine Oil Recommendations For 2.7 Cis?

Going to adjust the valves and perform the first oil change since I've taken ownership (1975 911 2.7 CIS). Don't know what previous owner used. I'm in Miami Florida very hot climate.

I was thinking Valvoline 20W50 (mineral oil). I see many people use Mobile 1 Synthetic. What do you people think, any recommendations?

Thanks Eric

In my '76 2.7 911S I use the infamous Castrol GTX 20W50. I change the oil and oil filter every 3000 miles or 3 months. Too much dust here for me to stand keeping a synthetic in the car for a year or more plus I worry about the effect of the synthetic on the older sealants and gaskets. Just added a external oil cooler to keep temperatures down in the summer. The auxilliary air regulator valve (above and between cylinders 5 and 6 on the passenger side) and exhaust gas recirculation plumbing (near cylinder 6) will make valve adjusting a challenge with the engine in the car. Clean off the intake valve covers well before you remove them to minimize the debris falling into the cam towers. Remember the first time tendency is to adjust the valves so they're too loose. Clean and blue loctite the screws/nuts on your feeler gage tool and have spare blades on hand. Plan on this job taking most of a day the first time. Cheers, Jim

Oil

My first P car was a 74 2.7 cis. And the first time I did a valve ajust and oil change. I put synergin synthetic and it went right thru it smoked and leaked a bunch And was told the synthetic is to slippery for a motor with some time on it and went back to GTX And didn't have a near the problem The valve ajust is like Jim says it takes a while to double check them all to make shure they are ok With out doing the on off on off of the valve covers because one is not quite right

Cool

Thanks for the tips. I ended up buying Valvoline 20W50 (racing) oil. It was $12 more per case than the Castrol GTX... I was gonna buy, and should have bought. But I wanted to make sure every last cent in my pocket went into my p-car..!!

Thanks for the tip on the blue loctite and such. I may have an advantage because I took off the smog pump and have SSI's. The A/C compressor needs to be put aside. I've been studying the Pelican parts tech note and my 101 projects for my 911. And I bought two feeler guages with extra blades.

Do both of you take out the spark plugs? Pelican Tech notes say no, 101 projects say yes!

I plan to take the whole day Saturday for this project and check my work twice before re-installing valve covers.

Regards
Eric

Taking out the plugs makes the engine easier to turn over however removing spark plugs can also dislodge pieces of carbon and if the pieces get under the valves their presence can cause an error in adjustment. I left my plugs in for my adjustment. I was able to turn over the engine by putting a socket on the alternator/fan nut and turn the socket with a 1/2 inch drive ratchet; a 2 or 3" long extension was required between the socket and ratchet to allow the ratchet to clear the fan pulley. Press on the fan v-belt to keep tension so it won't slip while turning the fan. Read the article and 101 about starting at the right place and always turning the engine the correct direction. Cheers, Jim
