New Car Day
Finally made up my mind a grabbed an 84' kiln red 911 coupe. Drove it home today. Car drives better than I do..lol. Had a hard time adapting to the transmission. I drive a tsx with a six speed that is very quick and slippery. Stalled it 4 times, forgot downshifting to first on a roll is not the smartest thing and it doesn't speed shift like the TSX. I gave a few rides around the neighborhood, I think I got the hang of it. Car has so much character' love it. Have 77' super beetle cabrio to.

Take your time shifting your Carrera. Not sure how much you've read about the 915 transmission but it's not a drag-race shifter. Chances are the 1st and 2nd gear synchros are worn so don't demand too much when shifting. Gently selecting 1st gear at a slow roll, almost at a stop, works best if you need 1st gear while moving.
Congrats, my '84 Cab is Kiln Red Metallic (Zeigelrot Metallic).

Similar Experience Here
I recently bought an 87 Targa with the G50 Gertrag transmission with 131K on it. I also have an 04 Ford SVT focus with 107K on it with a six speed Gertrag transmission. Big difference. The Focus shifts very smoothly and the Porsche takes a little patience and getting used to. I am getting better at it, but I don't think that I could come any where near the 0 to 60 in 6.1 seconds spec.

Gadjet,
Congratulations on your find, and welcome to the community! I picked up my Targa about 6 months ago, making this the longest winter in history. We love to see pictures!

Congrats! I have a 79 in a similar color. Learning the 915 takes some time, but is a lot of fun. Remember - spank the engine and baby the transmission.
And post pictures!

Great car in a great color. Post pics!
I just moved from an RSX Type-S 6 speed whose transmission was in fact god's gift to slick precise, abusable even when cold shifting to an 87 Carrera. The G50 is pretty good once warm and excluding 1-2 but it does take some getting used to. Still, fantastic car.

Amazing the number of people here who have owned a RSX Type-S; I use one as my DD and the tranny/shifter is superb, as are the front seats. I drove it in my first DE, before I got the 911 track ready, and it did very well.

Just signed the title over on the RSX-S... sad moment after 4.5 great years. Of course the Carrera is in another league and 15 years older so the comparison is foolish but the RSX does so many things so well that it felt a bit crazy to sell it and commit to DD in a 911. RSX has a pretty damn stellar motor and I've yet to use a better tranny, period. To some degree I even like both better than our S2000 which is peakier and requires more muscle to shift and has irritating shifter ergonomics.

31 mpg (and I drive 100 miles a day on my commute) fun to drive hatchback with fold down seats and tons of room Acura dealership is 1/2 mile away in 110,000 miles I have only replaced headlamps, brake pads, tires, and the battery oil changes cost $30 or less When I went to my 1st DE, the GF and I packed everything we needed for 2 days in the back of the RSX, drove it to the track, dogged the crap out of it on Roebling Road, loaded up and drove home in air conditioned comfort (although it did smell like abused tires for a couple of weeks). Great car for a DD.

Show us some pics!!! Did he replace the dashboard in it? He had mentioned over the phone that he intended to put a new dash in since the old was pretty badly warped. Enjoy the car! |

The Bug photo-bombed the pics... He didn't replace the dash.. that would have been nice it's warped pretty good but not horrible.. I had a little mishap with it this, had a tool get hooked in the cover when I was putting it back on, made a thin scratch on the left front wheel well right at the lip.. Used a little micro-finishing compound and scratch X and got most of it out... heck of a way to start a new relationship.. fun car, drives great.

Congrats on your new car. I have a 83 coupe in Kiln red as well. I am in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Not sure if your close by. Putting our cars side by side would look like bookends. Lol. Enjoy.
