NEW AUDIO INSTALL 87targa

While I am saving up money to start building those fiberglass tops, I decided to get into some sort of shape so building them doesn't kill me. Also, I've been let down by every person who wanted to help. I discovered also I am on my own!
anyway press on.......

Though I have not been posting the updates here I have been doing a bit when I am able to. This thing was in SUCH bad shape, if I knew what a PIA it would be to install and restore I would have started with an already restored car.

So, I will be taking the photo's from the other site and updates to move here so you guys can call me crazy.

One thing I want to stress, in NO WAY will I alter the car's metal. Everything will be installed with zero cuts, just updated and the end result will look something like an RS with a shelf, updated door panels (though I am building them to somewhat mimic) kick panels that will not be anywhere close to getting in the foot well. I have already done one set and will update them to a newer design.

All of the audio components were made from 91-94 or so. I wanted the system to have gear from the cars heyday. I got the head unit in 91 and have never owned anything but. Sony XES-P1 preamp, X1, crossover, and T1, tuner. The amps were some of the best made from the day, BLADE SE and were way too pricey for me to afford on Air Force salery. The same goes for the speakers OZ AUDIO (superman logo) 10's rear seat area, 8's doors, 4" components in the kicks. It will be an 8 channel system fully active. My dream system in my dream car. Now I just have to execute.

I got lucky and found a collector selling his collection. He really wanted them to go to a good home and just wouldn't sell them to anyone. Nor me until he knew they would never be resold, took weeks.

Then onto trying to find some NIB 10's and 8's this took another year to year and a half.

The fours I just found and have been looking for them for 3 years. They will be in Wed. I looked every week on ebay and then just started contacting every single person I found that used them in a build thread on a few different forums. Till I came across THE GUY... These are used but look new. Cant wait.

Then I sent my Sony stuff off to be gone through by the only buy left in the US that can fix them. Got to know him and buy several things from him for great prices. He fixed my baby to brand new spec., I am doing a repaint on the covers and not done just yet. Kind of what they will look like when done.

So, the kicks I built even though I liked them and built them for some Quart 4's I had NIB I don't think the new Oz's will fit. I'm going to redesign them a bit and prolly remove the fans. I'm in South Alabama and cant stand heat and NEVER use it. What is blown without them is more than enough for me. To make this I should say that I just took a mold of the factory panel. So, I still have it unmolested.

They came out great and fit perfect, I may hold onto them so I can swap front stage for comparison.

Then came the doors. When I first started on them I knew I wanted the shape of the doors with the 3ways however that wouldn't hold my 8's so this is what I did.
The cards were in sad shape so I just used the pocket and it wasn't in that great of shape, I learned when I took the carpet off. The new ones will get paint matched to the car. Also the bottom lips on the pockets were all waved up from water. So I cut them off too and built a lip along with the mid shape of the newer cards.
This is what I am after

This is what I have.

Then came the foam to shape. Looks like some really screwed up brains.

then molding

Proof an 8 can fit in the door without cutting

Then it was time for some tape so that I could remove the fiberglass overlay and take out all the foam. The back will get sealed, so the entire enclosure will end up being. Oh heck I wont know until I check with foam peanuts.

I discovered that bottle foam is nothing like the 2 part marine foam I have use when I built my boat. So, after I take off the overlay I'll cut out about 1" all the way around to round over the edges the glass over that. I'll use bondo to do that step. So in total the doors will have 2 layers of fiberglass, even the pocket to prep for paint.
The resin is cured and I am waiting to pop them off, this was before.

Then came the scraping up the sold sound deadening. I found the very best way to do this. Dryice did not work one bit in my case. So, I had a buddy that had a tool that was just the trick. If you are considering doing this I highly recommend getting one of these. The shot with the shoe its a 13 for ref. It only took me about 30min to do under the seat and rear footwell. Then to my surprise was that it could remove the glue, and horsehair stuff in the rear and glue used on the jute.

I still need to hit it with a brass brush on my drill to remove most of the left over enough for good adhesion.

After I removed the sticky stuff more sticky stuff took its place.

The sides really don't need that much, imho. I'll add just a little more but not much.

More to come on Sunday.

Thanks for looking,

please overlook any misspelling I am on my meds and really don't give a crap.

you might want to put a floating barrier on the sides, since that is where all the gravel strike noise will be coming in

- what volumes did you use for the speakers? are you using a ported design (Thiel alignment) or acoustic suspension (sealed)?

Thanks guys.

Please explain or link me a "floating barrier" Is that the little deal that goes in front of the rear wheel?

The doors will be sealed, one way or the other I'll get as close to .5cf as possible.

The subs will be sealed also. Nineball said he would guess I could get as much as
3cf or more. If I build my enclosure like he did. it will be close to his with the except
of the middle hump devider. And go almost all the way to each seatbelt wall.

911 audio

Nice job so far,
I was working in the car audio industry during the late 80s and saw and heard may great systems in the 911,i was impressed by the guys at ADS and Z box

My system is simple
Kenwood head unit 9000 ?? with direct ipod .HD radio etc and some quite suprising EQ system

Subs two 6" Morels firing down into the smugglers box set half way down and then sealed the cover ,creates nice tight bass/mid base through the old AC vents

Front ADS 6.5 with Orion 1.5 solarium tweeter

Rears 5"macrom pro mids macron 1, tweeters mounted in clover leaf/ADS rear deck enclosure.
it has very good stage and power

I used 1 sound-stream MC 245 (6 way amp) for the system

I look forward to seeing your end results you have some great gear there,
good luck

OK GOTCHA.

Yeah I have a roll of both MLV and CCF. I have CCF in both 1/4 and 1/8"
thickness. I've just never heard iit called that before. I'm really looking
forward to that step to see what a diff it makes.

Thank you sir. I would really like to see photos or a link to a build or something.......

I remember all the stuff you are using. I have a couple A/D/S 4
chanel oldschool amps. I was really fond of the A/D/S rear deck
enclosures. Not too long ago one was on Ebay NIB. HARD to
resist and stay on my own track with all this NOS stuff being sold
now. I found it very lucky to have found what I have now unused.
The only part that is, is my XES P1, X1, T1 that I purchased back in
91. Remember what those sold for? I got one for a friend of mine
a few months ago for 650... made me sick

I found one of the best installs in 911's I've ever seen but it was
taken of the website because the installer made it big and they
didn't want to have people asking about it. Fishman did the install
and I requested photo's but no go. He used all ABS to build the
panels. It was an UNREAL car. I wish I copied the pics and saved
them. You wouldn't happen to know about it would you?

Well, my LOTTO hit today!

I was lucky enough to find a member on other board that likes to experiment with different speakers a pretty good bit. He had these sitting in storage, we struck an agreement and the last couple missing pieces to my puzzle have been found. Now I have everything.... SSSSSSSSSAAAWEET! I'M STOKED.

The only disappointment I have always had with OZ, they didn't give the attention to detail that I'm accustomed to. I got lucky with most of my speakers but as you can see in this photo the "superman" logo is way off on the right speaker and a bit off on the left. For a product that cost over 500 when new one would expect perfection. I'm nitpicking I know.

On the plus side the mid's metered out like a new never broken in speaker would meter at 3.8ohm. The tweeter's were only .043. Lastly all drivers metered out exactly the same, like a match set. Pretty rare, my Quart's were about 1 to 2 ohm different, the Polk's I have are also a bit off. Though not noticeable of course.

For those of you interested. I did find out the ROTO tool was purchased at Harbor Freight. I wasn't told how much it cost, but like most everything at that store it isn't much AND it comes from someplace in Asia. I will check the price when I go get him some new blades. The one blade I did use is still in good shape, I just like to give back tools in as good or better shape then I borrowed.

there was a big thread on that tool in here a few months back. they have 2 versions now, corded and cordless, and more attachments than you will know that to do with.

I had a buddy on an audio board plot out my 8's and found out
that they would only need .258 or so to tune to 80hz. I should
have that easy with what I already have built without making
sealed cups for the baskets. I'll just tape up the baskets and
glass over them. Pop that off and glass it to the back of the
panel. This means zero cutting like I was planning/hoping. VERY GOOD!

Got a little bit done on the car done today while it was cool this A.M.. As you see I was able to get up the rest of the factory crap off the floors and installed the new stuff. I then cut a piece of 1/4" CCF for the firewall and glued it down. When it cools off this eve I'll finish up with the CCF in the back of the car and passenger side floor. I'm thinking on the rocker I'm going to use 1/4" CCF so I wont have any issues with bulk when I lay down the carpet. Not sure yet if I should use MLV on the rockers or not?

the issue is how heavy you want to make it -- it IS a sports car, right?

they say to cover everything with MLV and to tape the seams - I'd guess that is to prevent any holes for noise to escape from ("ports" since you are creating a speaker system - the cone is the floorboard & the vinyl forms the box with flexy walls)
