I added heated seats to my SC
The first concern I had was my seats were losing their cush and were deteriorating so every time I would vacuum There would be a lot of (foam dust) under the seats. My plan was to add new foam and add heated seat elements at the same time. I pulled the drivers seat and took it apart. Around 50 hog rings held the seats together. The seat bottom is four separate pieces of of foam. Two side bolsters and a two piece bottom. The bottom two pieces were rotten and replaced with 4" med density foam. They were easy to make patterns and cut with an electric knife (era 1974). I read online to put a piece of carpet under the foam to the foam from compressing on the springs. The hardest part is working with 4 pieces of foam. The side bolsters were a molded foam and were in great shape so I reused them. The next part was to clean up the red LOBSTER leather, install the heated elements and stretch it and replacing all the hog rings. On the back of the seat all I had to do was to loosen the back and slip in the heated pad. The seats look like they should, the leather is no longer loose and the heater works great. 3 hours for each seat. $85 for the heating elements and $60 for the foam.

Gary-
Neat project; congrats on gett'n 'er done. Did you take any pics by any chance? I'm interested in where you decided to put the switch. Thanks |
The switches are led roll 1-5 position switches just like VW Eos and jetta switches.I mounted them on the center console above the 2 AC switches. I actually already had 2 holes there so it was a great way to plug the existing holes. My wife says the seats are much more comfortable now. This weekend was cloudy and I will try to get some pictures tomorrow.

That location probably looks almost stock, esp with those switches. People forget over time that options like heated seats and power door locks weren't available during the SC's build era.
I've axed my center console so I'll have to look elsewhere...maybe a semi hidden switch like the sunroof. |
"hardest part is working with 4 pieces of foam."
can you explain that? do you mean fitting them all together afterwards? or cutting for compound curves in places where they meet? or... |
Which heated seat kit did you buy? Can you provide links to purchase the switches and seat heater kits?
|
This is great, thanks for the preliminary info and any more you can provide. I have to get my seats redone and this is an upgrade I was definitely thinking of doing.
Can you tell which kit you got, switches and the placement of them? Thanks again. |
I also would be interested to hear who the kit is from..Good Idea !!

Above Picture is the cushions in the seats that are original. I added some new foam seating and placed the heated mechanism between the foam and the leather. I used the HOG RINGS to lock it to the frame and coils. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329865347.jpg Another view of the thickness that the original seats had in foam. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329865395.jpg This is the finished seat with the new padding and heated seats. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329865444.jpg Another view of the same . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329865511.jpg Here are where the controls are. Right in front of the A/C knobs and in front of the shifter. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329865565.jpg This is a close up of the actual switches. VERY Interesting... ;)
Recently a lady friend of mine made a point of telling me how lovely her heated seats were... (in her new Alfa Romeo) Great up grade for our cars considering how marginal the heating system can be. |
That is why I added heated seats and upgraded the foam.

Hi Gary,
Found your post. Cheers |

I know it has been a bit since you did the modification, but I was wondering if you could go into detail on how and where you tied into adequate POWER to run the biscuit warmers? Got them installed and now just trying to figure how and where to power them. Cheers Trevor |
It is probably best to run through relays tied to the battery that can only be energized in the RUN position of the key. Putting even more current through the ignition switch on these older cars is adding risk.
