Which oil for Ole Smokey?

3.0L 78SC with 3.2 intake and Bitz EFI - circa 150k miles, smokes to start and under acceleration (not a new phenominium), so thinking that it's most likely valve guides.

Tune-up planned for weekend, adjust valves, replace S oil line, remove oil tank and check for possible leak, fix partially crushed hard oil line, new plugs and leads. Plus alt needs pulled and rechecked! (who am I kidding, this is like 3 months work for me!)

Any thoughts on best weight oil to use, hope to drive the car more regularly now that it is finally running again, but in the worst way - short trips (island living).

Thanks in advance, Glen

Hi:

I would recommend Brad Penn 20W50. Good heat protection, lots of zinc and phosphorous for the flat tappets in our engines. If your car smokes under acceleration I would guess it is piston rings. Valve guides would normally smoke more under deceleration (lifting throttle from high rpms).

Cheers,
Kay

Would take me 3 months to read that thread!

I'm limited as to the oils I can get locally, will do a little research as to what is available in the 20w50 range at my local autostore

Thanks again

Hi Glen,

Your engine needs higher levels of Zn & P than whats found at local auto parts stores so choose wisely after doing your research.

If you make the wrong decision, you will simply buy more parts at overhaul time.

I know there is ad earth of oil related opinions out there, but for my 79 SC I have been looking at Kendall 1057267 GT-1 High Performance SAE 20W50, that is about half the cost of Brad Pen 20-50. It is supposed to have enough zink and phosphorus for my flat tappet cams.

Does anybody have an opinion on Kendall oils?

I thought our host sold Brad Penn oils. Don't know about shipping to St Thomas. I know any good local auto parts store should have access to different motor oils although you might have to be patient and pay for shipping.

Hey Glenn

Just notice your location so it could be problematic.

As per Steve comments you need higher Zinc/Phosphor (ZDDP) content found in such oil as Brad Pen or Valvoline VV211 VR1 Racing Formula both found in SAE 20W-50 viscosity flavor.

Do look at what is available locally (don't discount Wal-Mart) and post the line up and wait for the comments from the peanut gallery

I got mine from Amazon.com at $70 delivered but it might be higher to your location but worth the expense when considering the consequences.

Of course you could also ask for guidance on the Transmission Oil recommendation but that is another 3 months of reading

P.S. I'll trade my location with yours anytime

Do you have access locally to Valvoline VR1 racing oil ? The 20w50 has enough zinc and phosphorous for our engines.

First....I just got back from a week on St John and thought a couple of times how great some of those roads would be in a Porsche. Beautiful area.

Now back on topic....irder a case of Brad Penn 20w50 on amazon -- assuming its not available locally. Lots of opinions out there, but most of the experts agree Brad Penn will treat the engine well, and convenience of Amazon can't be beat.

My non-roller tappet (early car) Porsche oil list distilled from local face to face conversations and 3 months of reading Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils (in no particular order...but readily available/deliverable in the U.S.). I went with the least expensive that I could find b/c our air-cooled cars require a lot of oil and some of us tend to change oil earlier than need be as a type of preventive maintenance

Ohh, that could be a troublesome thread..."Pelicanites, how often should I change my oil?" <--I actually do not know the answer to this

ZDDP rich oil for non roller tappet Porsches (early cars)
Brad Penn 20w50
Castrol Classic XL 20W-50
Valvoline VR-1 20W-50
Kendall GT 20W-50
SWEPCO 15W-40
Royal Purple
Redline

Transmission Oil- Swepco 201

Thanks for all the input, did a little recon at the local (only) autostore and was pleased to find the following 20W50 Valvoline products (prices/quart)

Synthetic Racing $8.99
VR1 $5.99
Premium $5.49.

I'm thinking I'll buy out the VR1 supply, burns me that there is another thread showing it available at O'Reilly for $3!!! - it is nice here ) though maybe not that nice (
