rear spoiler
Can the factory rear spoiler on SC's and Carreras be easily removed? Probably a dumb question, I know. I'm a prospective first-time 911 buyer and I just wanted to confirm that the spoiler is not a factor in choosing the right car (my wife, who will be sharing the car with me, hates the things).
Thanks! |

You can remove them but depending on the design, you may have some holes to fill and then repaint rear deck lid. Or replace the entire rear deck lid. These come up for sale in the used parts classified section of this site fairly often for several hundred dollars. A popular modification is to replace the rear deck lid with a fiberglass "duck Tail" spoiler, maybe the wifey would like those better. Good luck with your search.

Sure, just get a complete spoiler & deck lid & a plain deck lid, I have a regular lid, Statton Duck Tail, factory Carrera Tail, factory Turbo Tail & 3.8 tail for my 78 SC, all mounted on lids so I can change as I see fit (I do the same thing with wheels

This would be the smartest route if she hates the tail. Pull the tail and lid off as a unit. Stuff it in storage and get another used one and paint it to match or search for one the same color that is in good shape. Make sure you get the original grill and condenser hardware. Whatever you do have it ready cosmetically before mounting. Easier hassle wise if you can get to the bottom side easily for painting, etc.
Note, I don't remember if the condenser hardware is the same if someone adds a Carrera tail. Also, the ones with tails usually have two shocks vs. just one with lid only. Not sure if you can use two shocks with lid only. |

I would like to lift the whale tail on the left side so that I can fix the rubber gasket....it's out of shape on that side for reasons unknown.
Do I have to remove all bolts and unhook the condensor to lift one side of the tail? Not wanting to do anymore wrenching than I absolutely have to. Thanks, Russ |

You can, as the PO who removed my car's tail left both shocks in place. But the engine lid opens like a jack-in-the-box or ejection seat when the release is pulled if you have both shocks in place. I removed one of mine, much happier now.
