915 Noises. My Turn!
Well I waited to post this until I had adjusted the coupler with new bushings and put new fluid in hoping it would change or go away. No dice.
I actually have two noises I am concerned about. The main one is second gear is noisy, much more than the others. As far as shifting it shifts fine, but you can hear metallic noises throughout the RPM range. The other is a growling/whirring at low RPMs. This is in all gears, but most apparent when at about 1800 and I start accelerating. It goes away around 2200-2300, but that could be because the engine noise overpowers it. When I am just cruising, I don't hear it. I read someone else saying this could be the pinion bearing? Also, when I did the fluid change, I got a decent bit of metal shavings (more like hairs), but no chunks. Also, I don't know when the last time the fluid was changed, so who knows how long it's been accumulating stuff. I'm hoping the 915 experts can chime in to give me insight into these noises.

my insight says just take it apart and find out. nothing external is going to fix it, from what you describe.

That's pretty much what I am going to do. I know there is no way of fixing it without tearing it apart, I was just wondering if I can get more insight into the problems, and possibly what else to listen for or do to narrow the problem before teardown.
Oh by the way John, I had an 82 with a trans rebuilt by you. I'm pretty sure that one spoiled me. Now I know what a 915 can feel like, so I want this one to be like that also.

If you remove the shift fork plate from underneath the gearbox you can get a better look at the internals.
You can get a really good look at the 2nd gear syncros and dog teeth from the shift fork plate opening. Once you have it off take your time looking around with a good torch. It's even possible to take some good photos of the internals this way. Have you seen those cheap USB powered inspection cameras? The "growling/whirring at low RPMs" could be the final drive. (differential) But could also be the CV joints. Regardless of what people may say the 915 is a good gearbox... Good luck.
