I thought SRP could replace them? They aren't cheap, of course...

I modified a typ 911 trans. to fit my '73 once upon a time and there is a post on here about setting a 915 crossbar up to hold the typ 911 trans. - should work with a '69 also.

You'd need to fab a spacer - but if I can do it, you certainly can.

I was able to make some great progress today with the help of my nephew. We were able to re-install the oil tank, oil filter housing, oil filler, oil breather lines, thermostat o-ring and oil breather cover gasket. We were also able to clean up some of the hardware for the engine and repaint the washers for the engine and transmission mounts.

Hi Mike!

I did indeed get a laugh out of your picture. We must have been working on our engines at the same time! What year car is that engine for? There are not many transplants from out West that land in Florida. I guess we are two of the lucky few ;)

hey that was an sc motor my buddy needed it taken apart but had eye surgery a few days before i got there so i took it apart for him....broken head studs etc. i live in boca and currently have a talbot yellow 1980 sc and a 1987 carrera with a 3.8, 993 brakes,susp.,a/c upgrade etc

just another note on the valve cover gaskets...i have had good experience w/ the oe gaskets = the ones that have the thin green goop on the outline of where the covers mate to the engine with 1 caviot...use these oe gaskets 1x as they compress and will leek if reused a 2nd time...
this was my impetous t try the orange silicone gaskets of which i recall were more $$ and did not even last till the first valve adj or such...
good luck with the silicone...let us know how it works out for you...
also, with what ever you use, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE NEW NYLOC NUTS AND NEW ALUM WASHERS...DO NOT REUSE OLD NUTS & ALUM CRUSH WASHERS AS THIS ADDS TO THE POSSIBILITY OF OVERTIGHTENING THE VALVE COVERS LEADING TO GASKET FAILURE/LEAK ISSUE(S)...

Today I had a few hours to kill and took care of all of the oil leak areas I planned on fixing on the engine. I replaced the three seals for the oil cooler, put in a new crush washer for the pressure sender, and installed silicon valve cover gaskets. The oil cooler was a pain because I had to remove the engine shroud as it is not the correct one for my engine. To remove the engine shroud I had to remove the carbs and intake manifolds  Anyway, it is done:D I was also able to remove the muffler, which I am planning on grinding with a wire wheel and then refinishing with hi temp enamel. The things remaining for this project go as follows:

Clean up and refinish muffler
Install muffler
Grind and clean area on body above the transmission
Epoxy prime and spray area above transmission with undercoating
Clean up and repaint engine tin
Reconnect engine and transmission
Install engine and tranny

I have decided not to refinish the heat exchangers as it would be a royal pain in the butt to remove them and I am sure I would break a stud. Also they are in pretty rough shape and I don't really need them in Florida. The eventual plan is to replace them with some good used SSI heat exchangers when I have to rebuild the engine. My hope is that this is a day in the far far far distant future.

Here are two pictures of the progress from today

Rebel Racing makes a 901/911 Semi-Solid Transmission Mount. They work well and are easy to install. Installs in stock transmission mount hanger
replacing worn out and cracked factory rubber mounts. I run them on my 69 911S.

Thanks for the tip on the transmission mounts. I will not be replacing them this time as the ones in the link were quite expensive. Changing the mounts at a later date will be pretty easy.

I made some great progress the last couple of days and am ready to put the engine back in the car! I was able to refinish the engine tin and the muffler and put everything back together, including the transmission. I was also able to clean up the body around the transmission and respray with rubberized undercoating. I ended up treating the heat exchangers with Ospho and then spraying them with high heat paint. I have a feeling this will not hold up but it is good enough for now as I will eventually replace the heat exchangers. Here are a few pictures of the recent progress.

clean the gnd strap at the nose of the tranny "while in there"

use a 10% soln. of acetic acid (dilute some photographic chemical); rinse; then spray with DeOxit and use dielectric grease

replace the gnd. strap if needed

- you can no longer call your car a "rat"... :D

Thanks Randy,

I replaced the ground strap not too long ago and it is in great shape. I think it has only been in the car for about a year. I cleaned all of the connections when I installed the new strap and made sure to use dielectric grease. Since I can't call it a Rat anymore can I call it a Saved Rat? That was the point after all ;)

Here are a couple pictures of my 9 year old nephew helping me with the engine. He helped me put in the oil filter housing and assisted in addressing the triangle of death:D You can't start them too early right? He had a lot of fun with it and learned a few things along the way!

All done!! This morning Peter came over and we were able to put the engine back in the car, connect everything and go for a test drive. The car fired right up after everything was connected and ran like a champ during the shake down run of about 30 miles. The clutch feels amazing and I have it adjusted to where is engages after about a cm of travel in the pedal. The only issue with the engine re-installation is that for some reason the oil pressure gage is not working. It tells me that the oil pressure is at 30 psi the entire time. Previous to the engine drop the oil pressure would go all the way up to 60 psi, especially when the RPMs were high. The temperature gage works just fine so I know it is not the wiring harness.

Here are a few pictures of the success from today:

Connecting fuel lines, ground strap, throttle linkage etc. This is a lot easier when you have a helper ;) Thanks Pete!

Everything torqued down and filling the engine oil. It felt so good to get the engine back into the car:D:D

The muffler looks 1000% better than it did before. I hope that the paint stays on:rolleyes: I painted the bottom of the heat exchangers right after this picture was taken.

All done!!!! :D:D:D Thank you so much Peter! I could not have done this without your help.

Vielen Dank!! I am not sure that I will add an orange stripe thought. I am really happy with the slate grey and I like that the car is "schlicht" and not too flashy.
Thanks for the offer of helping with Ebay Germany.

I think you are going to owe Peter some serious grunt work on his project!

The Rat looks fantastic. What a change from when you first dragged that sad and neglected old car home from Costilla. Wonder what Damacio (was that his name?) would think?

It's really beautiful. Congrats on a job well done. I am starting to get moving on mine again after several months of thinking and looking for parts. I can't wait until the day when I get to go do a shakedown test drive.
