thanks for the info. i was thrown off by the serial #. i thought they started with 7 (911) or 5 (912) so the 101050 didn't make sense to me. i also found it strange that the second digit after the / was not there. and by not there i mean it looks like they stamped 901/0 and just never added the last digit.
i was told by the guy who sold it to me (for $200) that it came out of a race car that he bought for the motor. any value to this box? should i hang on to it or pass it on?

For someone with an early car like a 1965 911 that gearbox is very interesting, and not just because it's got good race gears. About 2 years ago, I sold just the case from a 901 gearbox with a similar date stamp to a guy overseas restoring a 1965 car for $500 plus several hundred dollars in freight. That was empty with no gears or ring and pinion. Nothing but the housing and tailcone.
You got a steal on that gearbox. Usual run of the mill 66-68 aluminum 901 gearboxes with AFMSX gears are selling for $500-800 as cores. That's a $1000-1500 gearbox there as long as the gears inside of it aren't totally shagged.
