I like bondo
So many times I read post of folks buying a 911 and never driving them.
First thing they do is rip them apart till their budget or marriage falls apart. Mine is fine ,it might have hidden rust..or Porsche mites.. I had two rusty doors, luckily I found on for my 74 targa,at a decent price .But the drivers I'll take bondo, over $600 plus shipping. So many guys dwell on "it needs to be rust free"and never get a chance to drive them. Americans spent $1,000,000.00 on a pen that could wright in space. Soviets took pencils Americans can't send a man to the station,Soviets can. I like bondo Sam |

Bondo has its place but I agree about the "budget" breaking ... I have been down that road before and refuse to do it again .. My car may be a five footer, but I like it and am just happy with it the way it is ... I keep it running well and that's more than most can say ... but most people see it from the back any way
And I believe it was the founder of our great cars who said ... These cars are meant to be driven and not polished Steve |

I greatly dislike rust, but agree with the sentiment of what you are saying. My Porsche is mechanically in good shape and reasonably clean, but I'd rather drive it than polish it.
Patina adds character!

i tend to agree with you about not worrying too much about getting my car back as it was when it left the factory, i accept mine is an old car, yes it looks pretty and its not in bad nick, but its nowhere near perfect, and if it was i would be afraid to use it, i bought my car to use it, and enjoy it on the road. ![]() Anthony. |

Having owned Fiats for many years, I don't like rust. I don't like Bondo as a rust treatment, it absorbs water. Bondo glass is OK, if you know how to use it right, with bondo for a skim.
Pencil shavings suck in space. Bondo sucks over rust. I have a space pen. They can still be had for 19.00. I bought a Mig welder in 89. Still works perfectly. I have used it to make many things, like hand rails, and structural repairs on cars, as well as repairing body panels. It has paid for itself many times over. You would not believe how many repairs you can make on a car with 10.00 worth of steel, a welder, a hammer, and a dolly. And maybe a skim of bondo. Now I have mad skills. I built my first engine when I was 16, and I used a pop riveter instead of a welder. Now I do better body work, and build better engines. Know your materials, and their applications. I can still use bondo. But can you go out to the garage and weld me up a shock tower ? Last one I did took me about three days after work, and the proverbial 10.00 worth of steel... But I hear you can do great things with bondo and chicken wire ... |

the guys that worry about getting it a 10 of 10 and are " on a budget " is kind of an oxymoron .. I can understand a serious collector or if you have money to burn to light your money fire but for most of us it is unrealistic ... but if you are jumping into it and going for broke with out realizing how deep you are going to be in are the ones that Sam is talking about ... I am just happy to have a car that I have always wanted and able to drive it and enjoy it ... its not perfect but then again neither am I but my wife puts up with me ...
Dont get me wrong my car is not a rusty heap in fact I don't think there is any bondo on my car so I am not sure why I responded to this post but I did ... Bob .. I think your taking it a bit to personal ... Sam enjoy your weekend and take the car out for a drive I do usually have the dirtiest car on the drives ... but have a lot to do and don't have the time to detail the car before taking it for a drive .. It gets washed a few time in the year and a coat of quick wax but thats about the extent ... Last edited by 80-911SC; 02-25-2012 at 02:19 AM.. |

if you cant maintain a porsche dont buy a porsche. no one wants to buy your lame ass bondo filled POS because you were too lazy or poor to repair it properly. buy a chevy citation or ford tempo and enjoy! and we dont like your substandard canadian beer or knock-off frech wine. some things are better left to the real germans and the real french... just sayin...

Good point. When it comes to selling, will you point out to the potential buyer that you like bondo? And that a rust free car is overrated? |
