Get it fixed. Use wevo mounts.

WEVO has new, stronger mounts that can be welded in.

You can drive it without risking your safety but I would not drive it hard and get it repaired ASAP so as to not cause any more damage.

You COULD remove the sway bar altogether until you get the mount repaired. Your handling will be compromised but it will be driveable.

If that is your swaybar mount then yes it is ok, but I would get under and remove it. Now, take it easy around turns because the car wil not handle the way you are use to. You will need new ones, of course, so get wevo's.

my other mount looks ok should i leave it alone or replace both at the same time?

Your car is safe to drive although it is a good idea to remove the rear bar asap. You can drive it until the mount is repaired though as stated the car will not handle great. Specifically the car will undrsteer and will feel like it doesn't want to turn. Several options for repair/replace but should be done by a shop as you need welding done.

this is common failure, try to find a shop that will do a nice job e.g. rust proofing/painting of the final weldment, maybe someone can mention a good local shop with P-car experience

I'd replace the sway bar rubber bushings while you're at it.
That side looks fine. Up to you though, your call.

I was very satisfied with the job done by a muffler shop. These guys know how to prep, weld and rust proof since that's what they do and it's all done without the Porsche price tag.

Is it me or does the bushing on the repaired side look a little worn? Shouldn't that gap not be there? Perhaps it is simply due to the other side not being properly attached, but I would replace that bushing while I was at it.

I've done both on my '88. Did not use the Wevo's but I think a newer more robust one. I'm still new to the area so would be interested in knowing who you get to do the work. Thanks, Ken

It looks like the mount nuts have just stripped out. You might be able to use bigger bolts and a tap to repair.

so here is the update... I'm a failure..... It sounded like simple process, jack the car up (check), tires off (check), pb blast soak the bolts (check), remove bolts (fail), i tried socket wrench, breaker bar, impact hammer, resoak, drink beer, repeat process, no go.

I really wanted to get it off so I could know if i neede new bushings as well, oh well,

any bright ideas?

I just went through the same thing this weekend on my 84 Targa. I could not get off the one bolt where the sway bar attaches to the drop link. If this is your problem, you'll need two 19mm wrenches. And don't be afraid to push on one with your foot. Sounds strange, but we got mine loosened in that manner.

Had a similar problem myself. PB Blaster overnight, then heat the metal where it screws in, not the bolt itself. I took a 8 foot pipe to extend the wrench. Good luck!

I'm going to give it another go. I jacked it back up after driving it a little. back to the overnight parts soak and Ill be bringing a torch and a long bar for good measure. we will see how it goes tonight, I'm just going to have to laugh if it all catches fire from the PB blast:)

Just keep using the PB blaster. Try some heat if necessary. Several years ago a posted a thread about replacing the mounts on my '86 targa.

finally a little more pb blast a longer breaker bar. I need to go back to the gym or make more money for power tools:) I am really suprised how flimsy these sway bar mounts are. now beer time

Nothing like an air or electric 1/2" impact wrench to get those things off. Good investment.

I would just have the other side welded with a new fabbed bracket. I made my own and welded it in place. The repaired side looks really good. Save the $$ on the Wevos!!

Looks like the nuts are still on to me, and the mounting bracket has failed. If I am right you need to have the old bracket removed (grind it off) and weld on a new one. Wevo makes a very strong replacement and I think they are sold by our host. Your car will handle like ***** until this is fixed FYI.
