Economical engine choice

Got a 74 911 roller for little $ and am flirting with engine ideas of how to power it on the cheap. Type iv? 2.2? Suggestions.

No such thing as a cheap Type IV anymore....watch the ads for something...they pop up every once in awhile.

Or you can do a Chevy V8.....%^b

Cheap, reliable, fast. Pick two...you can't have all three.

sell the roller. save the money. buy a car when you can afford to maintain it.

You're going to have to get lucky and find a motor that someone has sitting around and checks out (compression, leak-down, etc.) and cross your fingers that it will stay together.

At least entertain the idea rather than shoot it down.

As a teenager, we used to drive these "humble" cars. Things changed after college. I can now afford just about any car I want. However, i'm still intrigued by the rust bucket and humble porche that has one window covered with duct tape and plastic.

there are planty of used engines at 3k... but most will be worn out. what i would do is plan on a top end and some misc bits on top of the 3k. maybe 5k? still cheap compared to a full on rebuild...

JDM subaru ej20 with tranny..... convert awd to 2wd, then reverse r&p from Australia... good for some weight reduction too.... subaru tranny is less weight then a 915

~$3000 for about 280hp

Probably a better choice at his price point.

Scooby conversions even with a hair dryer have been known to run well with radiators in the engine bays of 914s....also have seen a 911 'vert with a rad where the AC unit used to hang.

Just thinking out loud... probably cheaper to do a 3.0 than a vw because of the fabrication factor in the VW. you could spend 3k on a 3.0 or you could spend 3k making a a vw work. seems like the cheapest air cooled choice for be a 2.7, but if you want some reliability a 3.0, then id say type 4 after that...
