Oil level
I am starting to drive home from California to North Carolina in my new "old" 1970 911E. It was completely gone over by one of the better wrenches in LA before I left and I feel incredibly good about the condition of the car.
The one exception is the oil level. For a couple of reasons, we drained and refilled the car a several times while it was being serviced. We felt like we had properly topped of the tank. The interior gauge was pegged right where it should be, but oil was barely touching the dipstick. During the first days drive, it became apparent that the gauge needs help. It jumped all over the place showing extreme reading in both directions. That said, I know the dipstick is the most reliable way to monitor the oil. However, I am concerned that I might not have the right dipstick. Can someone give me a measurement to check mine? Also, does the erratic gauge sound like it is a gauge or sending unit? Has anyone written an article on how to change the sending unit? Thanks for the help.

Hal:
Part number of dip stick for '70 is 901 107 770 00. Changes in '73, and then in '74. Of course '72 was in side door. As to gauge jumping, mine does too, but settles when I come to a stop. Hope this helps.

My gage bounces around a bit, too - although it settles down once everything reaches operating temperature. When I first got the car, oil level readings were extremely erratic. I fixed this by a thorough cleaning of the contacts and terminals on the sender unit. On my car (77 911S, like Marc's above), the sender unit is accessible through the passenger rear wheel-well. The wires run to a connection point in the harness behind the passenger rear tail light assembly. The job is a twenty minute affair and in my case it made a huge difference.
