Question Power door locks

Hi -

I just recently bought an '89 Cab (Woohoo!!!). However, the driver side door lock doesn't work. I can lock the passenger side door by twisting the knob, and this works fine. However, with the driver side door shut the knob doesn't twist. The car has an alarm on it and seems to have power door locks (I don't have the owner's manual yet).

When I was talking to the previous owner, he said that this was a problem b/c the battery wasn't charged enough. He said he had this problem about 2 months ago, took it in to some shop, and the shop just charged the battery. After that it magically worked for awhile. Since then, he hasn't been driving the car often so he thinks the battery is low again.

Can anyone help give me some hints as to what the problem is? Do I just need to charge/replace the battery?

Thanks!
-jay

You may want to check out the power lock controller. It is a small (2"x 4") black box on the passenger side mounted in the trunk up under the cowl. You may need a flashlight to see it. My 87 911 Cab had some gremlins in the lock/unlock department----random and different items. Until one day it wouldn't lock or unlock. The mechanic switched it out with one he had laying around and everthing magically started working again.

Unfortunately, the part cost $250 new from Porsche......probably could find a used one cheaper, but I didn't want to have the same problem in 6 months. When you have a Pcar, you need to be able to lock it......
